Subject: Reset or Not??

Message:
Hi,

I've just purchased and ordered some mods for my truck and was wondering what to expect and any advice on "resetting the PCM" after the mods are installed

I have a 98 Dak 2wd Reg Cab w/ 318(5.2), am waiting arrival of a K&n fipk kit, Gibson headers, Gibson 3" cat back Single side out, and MSD 8.5mm wires.

Will the 3" catback work, or should I have ordered the 2 1/2"? Will there be excess heat under the hood that I should watch for? (I saw something about "glowing" headers)

What are the best spark plugs to get? and their proper gapping?

And.....Should I reset the computer after all is installed?, If so, how?

Thanks in Advance,

Rob W.

3" is cool.

get autolight 3923's gapped at .35-.40

to reset the pcm, just disconnect the battery, and turn the key to the "on" position for about 10 seconds...or you can unplugg the 3 plugs on the pcm

Injection is nice, but i'd rather be blown.

So I do need to reset the PCM? Will I still see gains without resetting or will I be lean?

Thanks,
Rob

Cool truck BTW, Did it start out as a "sport"?
If so did you paint your bumper or get a different cover?

After I turn the ignition switch to "on" with the battery disconnected. Do I then hook the battery back up, start the truck and ........???
should I wait for any length of time or for the temp to reach any deg. before doing anything else?

Thanks again,

Rob

yes when adding any performance parts, it is recomended to reset the pcm.

nothing bad will happen if you dont, but i have been told that you will get more performance out of the vehicle if you do.

after hooking up the battery, i start it and usually let it idle for about a minute or so. i have heard after resetting the pcm, not to step on the gas for a little while because the pcm has to learn the TPS (throttle postion sensor) voltage. plus it dosent hurt anything to let it idle for a while.

BTW, yeah, my truck started life as a sport. ugly black bumper and all. i just painted the bumper along with the mirrors, handles and roof rails.
