Ok, I have a 2000 Auto 4X4 4.7L. I have never changed Tranny oil before so i have no idea on exactly how to do it. Can someone please tell me the procedures, # of QTs of oil i will need and anything else i should know. The type of oil i will be using will more than likely be Amsoil. Not sure yet, so if u want to suggest a different type, go right on ahead.

OH, I want to change my Gear Oil also, so help on how to change my gear oil would be nice!.. Brands on what gear oil to use would also help. I figure i should change the oil in both pumpkins.

thank u in advance

AMSOIL Universal ATF will work great, I have analysis to prove it. Use whatever you feel most comfortable with, as long as it meets ALL MOPAR specs(ATF+4, #7176, etc...) You should have the trans flushed, change the filter, and put in new fluid. Flushing will require you to supply 14 quarts, bring 16 to be safe. Just dropping the pan and changing the filter will only change 7-8 quarts.
For the pumpkins, again AMSOIL gear oil will work great, but use what you feel most comfortable with. I am not looking underneath at my truck so I can't remember if there are drain plugs and fill plugs on the pumpkins or just fill plugs. If both, drain the fluid and re-fill until full. If just a fill plug the fluid could be sucked out and then re-filled. You can also remove the entire cover to really clean out inside, just make sure it sealed back up very well. For both pumpkins it should take around 5 quarts. If you have never done either of this type fluid change before I would recommend bringing your truck to a mechanic you trust and pay for their labor if you supply the material. I have the ability knowledge to do this work but it was easier to have someone else do it that I trust. I purchased my truck at Bedford Chrysler in Bedford, PA and they let me do that. More vehicles get screwed up by people thinking something is so easy and they wind up creating more problems down the road for themselves. If you read this board enough I think you will come to the same conclusion. Do a search and transmissions and you should find lots of useful and completely useless info.
Good luck.

I would recommend that you become a preferred customer with Amsoil and order a case of their Synthetic ATF and six qts. of the series 2000 75w-90 gear oil.
You will save money by becoming a preferred customer and ordering that amount and any that is left over will not go bad.
There is a procedure for pumping out the torque converter using the transmission itself but you will need to determine if the condition of the fluid in your transmission justifies doing so .... in other words ... If the fluid is not burned just drop the pan and replace the filter(s) and fluid.

No, it won't void your warranty. You will want to do fluid analysis at recommended manufacturer fluid change intervals to document the fluid is OK. This is if you plan on going with extended drain intervals. For example, I am changing my trans filter every 30,000 miles, but before the filter change I did a fluid analysis to see if the ATF is doing OK and it was. If it wasn't I would have flushed the trans w/the filter change but since it was OK I only did the filter change. Had to put back 7 new quarts of fluid to replace what drained out but if I had a clean container to drain the ATF into I could have put it right back in. That is the advantage of fluid analysis and AMSOIL products.

Let me see if I can answer all your questions (that were not previously answered)with just one post. If I miss something let me know.
--------------------------------------------------
AMSOIL Synthetic ATF provides outstanding high and low temperature performance and oxidation stability. AMSOIL Synthetic ATF also improves fuel efficiency, reduces transmission temperatures and increases equipment life. The service life of the universal AMSOIL Synthetic ATF is up to five times the service life of conventional ATFs.

Since 1999, due to the special requirements of their automatic transmissions, Chrysler has recommended a unique ATF+4 formulation. In addition, Chrysler has been recommending ATF+4 for all previous makes and models of Chrysler Corporation vehicles. The new AMSOIL Synthetic ATF exceeds the performance specifications for Chrysler ATF+, +2, +3, and +4 as well as MS-7176 A, B, C, D, & E; MS-9602 A, B, & C. as well as Ford Mercon or General Motors Dexron III applications. AMSOIL Synthetic ATF is available in quarts, quart cases, twin packs, 30-gallon and 55-gallon drums.

Helpful Differential Recommendations:

-Flush (drain) as much of the old fluid out.
-Differential fluid capacity depends on ring gear and axle housing size.
-Do not over/under fill differential. This could mean a capacity difference of a quart or more and may cause overheating problems. (See the owner’s manual for proper fill level)

AMSOIL gear oils are formulated with friction modifiers for limited slip differential applications. There is no need to add limited slip or additional additives. If you choose a different manufacturer than Amsoil ... fine by me, just offering my services.

-After changing the differential fluid, drive the vehicle in 7 or 8 figure eight turns, so the new lubricant can work its way into the axle assembly.

Synthetics provide the long-lasting protection, fuel efficiency and dependability needed for top performance, even extreme-pressure conditions. Stays fluid in cold temperatures for easy cold-weather shifting.
----------------------
Amsoil Series 2000 75w-90 is excellent for use in passenger cars and trucks requiring a GL-5 gear lube, including those with limited slip differentials.
--------------------------------------------------
AMSOIL PRICING
Series 2000 75w-90 $9.20 Qt. / 75w-140 $12.05 Qt. retail.(preferred customer $7.20 / $9.35 respectively). You can become a preferred customer for $20 per year and $10 for a 6 month trial and receive up to 25% off retail pricing.

I "believe" that GM charges over $13.00 for a quart for Goodwrench Synthetic 75w-90 GL-5 gear lube.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Most Important: Keep accurate service records and all purchase receipts
--------------------------------------------------
Vehicle manufacturers recommend using motor oils meeting certain grades and American Petroleum Institute (API) service requirements. Whether the motor oil is petroleum based or synthetic will not affect warranty coverage. The manufacturer is required to cover all equipment failures it would normally cover as long as the oil meets the requirements and was not the cause of the failure.

AMSOIL exceeds these requirements and has never been deemed the cause of an engines failure. Even so, AMSOIL has its own limited warranty, protecting you even further. In addition, the federally mandated Magnuson-Moss Act states that a manufacturer may not require the use of a specific brand of aftermarket product unless it is provided free of charge.

* If a car dealership, service center or other business states that using AMSOIL will void your new vehicle warranty, ask for that statement in writing and send it to AMSOIL Technical Services (AMSOIl Inc., AMSOIL Bldg, Superior, WI 54880). If the business won't provide the statement in writing send AMSOIL Technical Services a letter identifying who made the statement, the name and location of the business and what the specific statement was. AMSOIL will then send a letter to the business informing them that their position is inaccurate, and, in fact violates existing law. Your name will be held in confidence. A sample of this letter can be provided upon request.
--------------------------------------------------
For additional information on Amsoil's Limited Warranty please visit my website.
--------------------------------------------------
Amsoil's Limited Warranty is in effect when Amsoil Products are used in mechanically sound engines, providing, of course the oil is kept free of contaminants by changing the oil filter according to the manufacturer's recommendation or, when using an AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filter, changing the filter based on Amsoils oil and filter change recommendations.

Additionally, if there is ever a question of whether or not a particular oil was the cause of an engine failure make sure to get a sample of the used oil in a clean bottle, typically 6 oz. minimum. The oil can then be sent to two independent testing labs for analysis (labs are located throughout the country).

A reminder: Keep accurate service records and all purchase receipts
--------------------------------------------------
Remember, an informed consumer is your best defense against being taken advantage of by a vehicle dealership or service center.

I'm also due on tranny fluid and filter change and I have a question to those who have done it already. Is there a reverse band you have to adjust inside the pan?. all of the chrysler/dodge vehicles that I have owned, had a foward adjusting band outside the tranny and a reverse adjusting band inside. If it does, does anyone knows the procedure and torque specs? I will really appreciate, cause the rip-off haynes manual doesn't cover 45RFE tranny.

FredDQC - the 45RFE does not have any bands to adjust. Just change the fluid and filters and go.

Its hard to get all the fluid out, unless you want to disconnect the trans cooler "if you have one" and disconnect the return line, put into a bucket and start it up and keep adding new oil till it comes out new. Most people will just drop the pan,get out what comes out, then lower the valve body down a little and more will come out and you will be left with just the old oil that is in the TQ converter and lines.
