Subject: 5.9 RT/Quad Cab???
IP: Logged

Message:
Just came back from the Dodge dealer. They tell me I can't get a Quad cab and the RT 5.9 package together. I thinking about ordering the Quad cab, 2 wheel drive, sport package with the 5.9, and limited slip 3.55 (or 3.91). Any of you guys know what else I would have to buy/add (suspension, exhaust, computer...) that would make the Quad perform and look like an RT ??? Are there any factory parts I should not get, and get aftermarket instead ??? Thanks a lot, can't wait to join the club...

If you get it loaded minus the tire and handling pkg, you can then get the Hotchkis suspension, the flowmaster cat back and the R/T wheels and you're a little better than the R/T. To make it better than that, get the Mopar or K&N FIPK G II, a Flometrics billet TB, some Mopar headers, and a PCM flash.

I would guess since it is the same motor and produces the same hp and torque you are fine there. Suspension may be a diffrent story the R/T has performance suspension, easy enough to do, If you get the hotckhis you would have much better then the R/T. Then ask the dealer to order you R/T rims they list at 160.00 MSRP but I know they can go at least to 125.00 each(how much i paid for mine)and should give them to you at cost sine your buying a new truck. Then order some eagle RSA 255/55/17 tires (about 140.00 each) or other tires better (Toyo proxes S/T in 255/60/17...have them too). The last thing is paint. Get a good body shop to pull your front and back bumpers, prepeare them and paint them to match your truck.
THERE you have it your own R/T quadcab dakota.
prices as follows:

Suspension:
billestin shocks(DML group buy 200.00 for all 4)
Hotchkis swaybar set(DML group buy 500.00 for both)
sus total $700.00

Wheels and tires:
(4) R/T rims 500.00 or less from your dealer.
(4) Eagle RSA tires(or toyo, falken, etc) about 140-150 each so est 600.00
w&t total $1100.00

Paint:
2 bumpers done professionally 200-400 depending?
max paint total 400.00

700.00 + 1100.00 + 400.00 = $2200.00max

and you have one sweet R/T, also call around alot you could save more than a few hundred dollars, check ebay and swap meets for the tires and/or rims. maybe paint yourself(if you can) save upto 300.00

You can also order R/T decals off of ebay for about 20.00

Anyway i only know all of this because I just got done doing it to my 2000 clubcab. and some other stuff too.

Don't forget the fender flares - a major part of the R/T look. They can be purchased from your Dodge dealer in any of the factory colors. They install in 15-20 minutes (I ordered them at the same time as my truck, but they shipped 'em seperately anyway), and they're truly neccessary for any tires wider that the 215's.

Ahhh yes the fender flares!!! Get them through your dealer, should not cost you more than 200.00(what I paid for mine) and they come painted to match, with the 3m tape on them and the mounting hardware too. Mine went on in about 15 minutes, but I pulled off the tires and put it on stands to make it easier(another 10 min)

Let us know if you are gonna do this, keep us updated, and send pics, I had this idea just not enough money to buy the quad(:-<) but Im getting along with my clubcab(4.7 R/T-Killer)(come get some big boys)

I'll talk to the sales manager again next week, see if he'll take the sport rims/tires in as partial trade for the RT rims/tires. I'll update you guys as soon as I know...thanks again.

They might actually exist....a Real R/T qc. Call Manuel dodge in Richardson TX. I have seen one on the lot and have also seen a red one at a stereo shop in south dallas. Are they real? Maybe but I wouldn't put it past a dealer to make the mods and sell it as an original here in DAllas. It would be the ultimate factory rare car though. As far as looks, I liked my black CC R/T better. It just looked meaner and the QC looked like a lowered mom mobile. Sorry, but I own a 4x4 and this was just my opinion of the one two I saw. They were both red and may have been the same one.

2000 QC 4x4 5.9 Black, no mods.....yet!!

Hey everybody, thanks for all the information. I ordered the Quad, 4X2 Sport yesterday. I got it loaded with the 5.9 and 3.92 rear. Dealer had to order it , so hopefully I'll see it in no more than 8 weeks. Now I have time to get a parts list together over the next few weeks.
I'm going to hold off on buying any suspension pieces, since I'm not sure what will be on the Sport 4X2. It's suppose to have a rear sway bar, but I don't know about spring rates, and ride height...

Thanks

I really like mine. I've pondered going with the Hotchkis suspension but I've ridden in trucks with it and the ride is really stiff. Mine corners pretty good now. It won't outdo a Porche but it will certainly hold its own. I drive it a lot and I always have people riding in it so Hotchkis is pondered but I haven't gotten serious enough to do something about it.

Cuda, did you go ahead and get the leather? Also I think holding off on the suspension is smart. Id go ahead and order the rims/tires/exhaust/fender flares/and maybe the shaker and rollpan you were thinking about. while you have a few weeks you could get it all together and make sure none of it goes up in price or on back order, etc. Quote the dealer the prices I told you and tell me what happens.
one way or another keep us updated. By the way someone posted a quadcab R/T on the viewers ride pics section. Id find out who owns it and get with them they may be able to answer questions better.

Yes, I got the leather interior, and the fender flares automatically come with the Sport package. Dealer is telling me rims at his cost, are over $400 each. I said no thanks. I think I'll get the knock-offs...
I will have the dealer put the Mopar computer on, and probably headers too. I don't want to void my warranty. I can put the cat back on myself, and I don't think that would mess with the warranty.
Has anyone used the locking bed cover that Mopar sells? i'm talking about the hard, body color one that is pretty expensive...any feed back ???
Does anyone know how the Shaker Hood performs, and what about rain? The shaker on my 71 Cuda has cable operated doors that I close if I get caught out in wet weather, but the one's I've seen for Dakota's seem to be open all the time. Any info would be appreciated.

PS. This is going to be the longest 8 to 12 weeks of my life...

AGREE, RedDak.... the flares are not even an option with a 2WD sport (or SLT, for that matter). You CAN, however, order them as an accessory, ane they're still a bargain, considering that the price is equal to anything aftermarket, and they'll arrive already color-matched.

I just checked the ones that were listed on the web site you gave me the other day. They are going for $180.00 each on www.capitalwheels.com item # COW-2105 (17x9, 6 lug, 41/2) But I'd rather have the factory rims.
I can't get too rough with the sales manager, since a friend of a friend referred me to him. However, I can show him the invoice you sent me, and see what he says...I'll also try walking over to the parts counter, and tell them that I want the rims at cost...can't hurt to ask...I'm also going to ask for a bunch other parts at cost. The sales manager told me he will give me accessories at cost...So far this is the list of parts that I think I should get from the dealer, and also have them install them:

1-Mopar computer
2-Headers
3-Bed liner
4-Tonneau cover
5-R/T Decals
6-And the Fender Flares (if they don't
automatically come on the truck)

BEST PERFORMANCE MOD IS TO HAVE THE STOCK COMPUTER REFLASHED AND HAVE AN EXHAUST SHOP CUSTOM BUILD YOU A CAT BACK SYSTEM. HOWEVER MBRP MAY HAVE USED MY EXPERIENCE TO MAKE AN EXACT FIT KIT. A few updates on this thread, the fender flairs are standard now in 2002 on all Dakotas with the wheel and tire package 4x2, and 4x4. The rims are on the mopar website for $160 each list with centercaps so the dealer reporting $400 each is looking up R/T accident replacement wheels, not Mopar accessory 17" wheels (indentical in every way). The only problem is why spend the extra money for the wheel and tire package and the good looking 16" wheels only to buy slightly better looking 17" wheels? I bet the 16" would go for over $100 each (more with new tires) on E-bay as they are hard to come by and cost over $300 each at the dealer.

If you wish to race around town turning corners at 40 mph then why are driving a 4 door truck? In the long run you will want a comofortable truck that can go fast when needed. So don't go overboard with the suspension mods.

Hi all,
It's been a while since I’ve posted (sorry been very busy with work. First of all I have to say that I love my truck, it's allot fun, and a great daily driver, and good for weekend trips.
As of this writing...I've put the wheel flares on (they don’t come on the 4x2), the Gibson 3" cat-back (single pipe), and the K&N FIPK. The FIPK that Summit Racing sent me was for the 99 model year, and wouldn’t fit without modification. Since they couldn’t get me the correct one, I sent it back, and ended up picking up the correct one at the Mopar Nationals in OH. Also did a lot of homework on bed lids, and in my opinion the ARE Lid is the strongest and most durable. The strut arms are of a different design, which helps take pressure off the lid, and bed rail, when the lid is closed. Future Modifications...Put the RT rims on in the spring, since I’ll probably fair better with the Sport rims through the NJ winter. Although the truck handles great (for a truck) I would like to put stiffer rear sway bar on (not sure if I should touch the front. Also want to do the higher ratio rocker arms (I think Crower makes them)and either a JET module, or KB Optimizer. (The KB optimizer is mucho $$$). Not sure what to do with the headers...I have the pre-cats, and I cant justify spending $600 for 7 horsepower ??? I have alot more to say (I took it drag racing 2 weeks ago), but I've gone on too long already.
Any ideas, comments, or advice (even criticism) would be greatly appreciated.

Cudaboy,
I have a R/T QC that I made. Other than not coming from Dodge this way, it is a true R/T QC: and a 4x4 to beat it all. I live in West Virginia, and 4x4 is a necessity. I bought the factory R/T wheels/ center caps, and put factory-style decals on it, that were made by Glen Renzoni. These are great decals!! Mine is a 2000 white Sport, that has every factory option. If you want your truck to be a true R/T conversion, you will need the underhood insulator (not available from factory on a Sport), Deluxe Convenience Group, Light Group, flare, fog lamps, body-color front and rear bumpers (I left mine black to resist chipping of non-factory paint, and non-matching problem), heavy-duty shocks and rear stabilizer bar (I replaced the factory rear bar w/ the R/T bar (less than $200 complete) and left the shocks the same), leather-wrapped steering wheel, limited-slip rear differential, and 3.92 axle ratio. I am pretty sure I have the only R/T QC 4x4, and that is pretty cool. Everyone asks "where did you get a R/T QC: I didn't know they made one". My truck came with everything necessary, except the body-color bumpers, wheels, decals, rear anti-sway bar, and underhood insulator. I now have everything except the body-color bumpers, and I won't change them. I think too much of the same color on such a big vehicle, looks bad. I like the black on the bumpers. It is a good contrast, in my opinion. I have several engine mods, as well. I estimate between 290-310 hp on my truck. It runs pretty decent for a 4x4. It weighs 5,200 lbs. without driver/ passenger on the local scales. It will stay a fender-length ahead of a new Mustang GT up to 120 mph. Oh well, let me know if you have any questions.

What engine mods do you have?
I’ve had a lot of people do a double take, and ask me questions. But that’s not why I got the truck. I don’t like too much attention, and like to keep things subtle. The dealer I bought the truck from threw in the decals, so I put them on. I ordered the truck with every option available, including leather seats. I didn’t get 4X4 since you can get by with 2x4 around here, as long as you don’t go off road. (I have a 97 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2, which is awesome off road, and in bad weather). I left out that I also installed a Bed Rug, before getting the lid. THE BIG NEWS IS THAT MOPAR PERFORMANCE HAS A BOLT ON REPLACEMENT SINGLE PLANE INTAKE MANIFOLF FOR THE MAGNUM MOTORS. Check it out, it just came out, and I want to look into it. It is supposed to be a bolt on, that gets rid of the “beer barrel” intake.
I took the truck to Island Raceway in NJ a couple of weeks ago. I wasn’t disappointed with the performance, considering the weight of the truck. I ran a best of 15.6 @ 85.6 mph. My friend brought his (slightly lighter)2001 RT CC, and did 2 tenths better (he has the K&N FIPK). I've frustrated the sh*t out of an Acura integra, Audi A4, and Hnda Prelude. The guy in the Prelude was really angry, and raced me 3 times in a row...and had a hard time accepting his loss. He had the big rims, low profile tires, clear lenses...but I guess didn't do much to his motor.

I don't give a crap if you believe me or not. It was a GT (not a V6 with decals), and I did outrun it. If you want to make a trip to WV with a GT, we can find out. Otherwise, keep your bullcrap comments to yourself. I didn't want an R/T: I need 4wd, and an R/T does not have this. I wanted a 4wd with a 5.9, and this was my only option. I may be an "R/T Poser" to you, but in reality my truck is an R/T QC 4x4. It has everything a factory R/T has, plus 4 doors and 4wd. There is alot of cars and trucks out there that get really surprised when this 4x4, 5,200 lb. truck blows their doors off. I have also beat a "real" R/T pretty good, on several occasions. I bet you didn't want to hear that, though. Sorry for busting your bubble!!

I know I'll probably catch heck over saying this, but for my application it was true. I do not recommend the colder Autolite spark plugs (I believe they're 3923's). These really hurt the low-end power in my truck. I know alot of people swear on them, but the factory Champion's were a much better plug in my truck. I have since replaced the Autolite's. I couldn't take the loss any more. A good, cheap modification for better throttle response, is to replace the factory distributor cap with a heavy-duty unit with brass contacts. You can feel the difference. Brass is a better conductor than aluminum. The factory rotor is brass, but not the cap. The S-bolt is a little bit of a help, as well. Let me know if any of this helps, or if you have anymore questions. I don't mind talking to someone with some sense. That Jonas guy is screwed up!!! Who's on crack?????

Hey cdartgo,
I bought the 17" RT rims from the dealer, and he gave them to me for $120/each when I was buying the truck. There is no difference...it's the same exact rims. Chrysler has 2 different part numbers for the same part. Even the guy behind the parts counter was baffled. And in case you are wondering, the center cap is included with each rim.

Ronald Taylor,
I am also from the WV area. I actually live in Beckley. If you have a chance, read the above posts that I posted. I made an R/T clone, that is a QC 4x4. I got bad-mouthed some guy named Jonas for being a so-called R/T poser. I don't know what his deal is. I have to have 4x4 to get around in the winter. There are no factory R/T 4x4, so I made one. I don't see the problem. If you have any questions, let me know.

troy, email on the list of parts and part#s you used on yours, iam planning to do a 2wd dakota R/T clone soon based on a v6 club cab, legit R/Ts are available here, but the dealers really stick it to you when you try to buy one and the used market isn"t much better around where these trucks are concerned.I have seen 2wd cc for sale real reasonable and i think i"ll build one this way instead of being taken to the cleaners.i"am only planning to drive it on weekends so i do not want to spend a large amount of money on it. email me at taylor9565@msn.com if you want to reach me direct or on this page. thanks alot
