I'm hoping that you got the whole housing? If not then the third member will not work for your 8 1/4. Your 8 1/4 is accessible from the back of the rearend housing...while the 8 3/4 third member goes in the front of the housing. Hope this helps.

no, they won't mate. what you have is the chunck, pig, 3rd member....etc... there are lots of names.

the 8 1/4 and 8 3/4 are totally different animals.

you'll need the entire housing. you have 1 piece, you need the whole thing. the housing is what you plug the pig into, and it holds the axleshafts, you bolt your leafs to it, and it's what holds the brakes and wheels on the truck (in a very simplistic view).

where did you get the pig? what you have there will bolt into any 8 3/4 housing....so if you have a junkyard around, you could go grab a housing (300+ bucks) out of a late 60's/early 70's MOPAR and replace your whole rear end (a serious improvement)...the 8 3/4 will take whatever most people can throw at it in a Dakota...and if you need to go any stronger (aftermarket 9" or a Dana 60) then you're a lot farther along than I can help you with.

Ok, what gives here dude?
I just performed this whole conversion like less than a month ago and explained it all to you, you dont believe me?

If you have to ask all these questions and cannot weld you really dont need to worry about this conversion, sorry.

On the bright side, if your 3rd member is really limited slip than you can probably sell it for enough $ to buy a Power Trax or something.

You didnt make me mad dude.

For real though, its alot of work on either model, you have to be real good at research, engineering and welding to even attempt it.
You DO loose ABS and will have to install a perportioning valve in the brake system.

If all this sounds like to much than dont do it or have someone who knows what to do and how to do it take care of it for you.

You will have quite a bit of money and time wrapped up in it for it not to work. I will admit the 3rd memeber with L/S is a substantial part of the overall cost but not of time and labor.

Take care.

47 huh?

I'll give you a bit more than that for it if you wanna sell it?

Can you see the spider gears? I know you got it from your dad but I am just wondering if its truly a L/S.

Where are you at? in the US I mean.

If you were close to Va I could install an 8 3/4 for you.

I have extra space and been thinkin of takin on some custom work again.

If not than look at the soild part next to the big gear (ring gear), if its open, looking in you can see 2 gears facing 2 more than its an open unit. If this is a stock Mopar L/S unit than the area next to the big gear will almost be enclosed. A round area about 3" diameter.

Hope this helped.

Be handy to have a speed sensor on the ring gear also. Thats what the wire coming off the center of your axle is for.
