My next upgrade is going to be HO cams. I talked to KRC Performance on the phone, and they seem very confident in their product. I was going to order them, when I noticed that Speedtweaks is offering HO Cams as well, and they're even coming out with EHO Cams, that are going to produce about 10 more HP. I do offroading, not dragging. I need input.

dweishaar,

I spoke with them also, because I ordered the 70mm tb and asked what else would compliment it well, they recommended the HO cams and said they would work great for a truck of my weight (2001 4.7L CC 4x4)

I also use my truck for 4x4 only, but I want the power to eat up all of the other trucks on the road (ford, chevy, gmc, nissan, toyotas etc. etc.).

I have not ordered them yet, but if you do, please email me and let me know what you think.

Thanks,

70mm would be my recommendation. I would also recommend the camshafts for the HO setup in that heavy of a truck. Take care!

You definitely want the HO Cams. I got the intake as well, but I think the Cams are by far the best mod yet on my truck.

Oh yeah I know that. :) But I want them to spend the time and R&D dollars and not me. If it comes down to it I may try and develope some cams but I doubt it. I have had my cams for eight months now. Would be nice to see something even better though.

I'm ready for cams but I don't want to tackle the install myself. Would a Dodge dealer be best or an independent shop?

The dealer would have the most experience and tools but may cost more. If the dealer does it you don't have to buy the wedge tool but it is only $20 from what I hear.

Finding a shop to do this work is difficult. Expect to pay several hundred bucks. I want to "do it myself" but stuff like this makes be nervous. I decided if I was going into the engine, I was going to do it once and get it over with - that means heads, cams, and intake all at once. One set of gaskets, one time. Of course I asked around about having a shop do it - $500 probly isn't that bad, but then a friend of mine told me he'd help me do it for a six pack of his favorite brew - since he rebuilt his first engine solo at the age of 15, I'm confident he can help me all I need with this. Moral: Check with your friends. You'd be amazed how many people out there love to tinker.

Cotharyus-

If you have your buddy do it, see if he'll let you help tear it down. I think people get spooked too easy when it comes to pulling an engine apart. If you have the slightest mechanical ability, patients, and pay attention to details, then you'll have no problem. Just remember you need to have an area that is surgically clean for reassembly.

You wouldn't believe the stuff I used to see when I worked as a dealer mechanic. The "we don't need a torque wrench because it's a warranty job" mentality and the car would still drive its way out of the lot. Chrylser didn't used to allow us enough warranty time to properly check and resurface aluminum heads on the 2.2 Turbos after they blew a gasket, so most guys would take just enough parts off to lift the head up and slide a new gasket in. It would work for about 15-20K miles before was saw the same car again.

That's why I am all for people learning to do their own wrenching. Not all dealers are that bad and not all techs are like that. I wasn't, that's one of the reasons I stopped working at a dealer. I don't know why I even paid for an extended warranty. I never take anything to the dealer unless it's a safety recall.

Automatic transmissions....I thoroughly believe you need a gift from God to properly rebuild an auto trans. I have seen good techs screw up auto transmissions and back yard gearheads turn out the most reliable race trans. Don't ask me how.

I got my chain tensioner wedge from Miller tool for $15. Part #8350. Let me know if you need anything from the factory manual.

Thanks Muzzy I will call them monday. I was going to put in the cams today and make a wedge out of wood, but my wife had to go to a meeting in Ramstein. That means that dad had to be a dad.(3 crumb snatchers 9,8,3) So since I have to wait till next weekend to do it then I might as well get the right tool.

Later,
