Subject: Just how bad is it?

I've heard some comments on here that the 5.2 was not the best engine. Why is this? Does it not have as much potential as the 4.7 and 5.9?

I currently have a '97 with the 5.2 and have been considering tweaking the engine. Would I be better off waiting to buy a new truck with one of the other engines, or is it worth my while to upgrade this one?

Thanks

its not as big as the 360, and not as advanced as a 4.7, but that dosent mean its not a good engine, or a good engine to build from.

i have put a few mods on my 318, and i am verry happy with the results.

an advantage it has over the 4.7 is there are a lot more performance parts available for it.

Just because it's not the "best" doesn't mean that it's not a good platform. If you're looking to hotrod the hell out of it, parts availability will make it kill any 4.7 out there. But the 5.9 is superior simply due to the fact that it's mostly the same engine w/ more displacement (and there's just as many, if not mor, parts available)

The 318's bore to stroke is more for a high revving engine as opposed to a 360, that's more for low end power. The problem comes in the intake system that dodge uses which is the same for both motors and causes the 318 to choke at 4500+ rpms. It can make power, and lots of it if you set it up for what it is. Use an M1 intake along with the right cam, heads, and a flashed PCM (or Mopar PCM) and you can take advantage of that power at the 4000-6000rpm range instead of it bogging down.

I have a buddy who supercharged and sprayed his 318 to 500 hp a few years back. They are just fine for modding, if you've got one. ALmost everything that works on the 360 (as far as mods) will work on the 318. You can even stroke the 318 out to 390 ci. I wouldn't wait. Start tweaking....

Thanks for the info, guys. Now that you mention it, my truck does seem a little sluggish on the higher RPMs.

Looking forward to getting started...
