Getting my cat-back done tomorrow. 4Wheel Parts is doing a custom job with flowmasters. And with any luck at all, TruckPerformance will have the Airaid on my doorstep tomorrow morning. It's time to save up for the suspension lift/wheels/tires now. By the way... I'm accepting donations. =)

Not only that, the manufacturers are out here too.

All except the hood manufacturers.

Sometimes it does. When you're near the manufacturers a lot of times you can use your vehicle as the prototype. That can get you new products quicker and cheaper. Plus when you're prototyping and there's a problem the scientists are right there to work on it.

I've seen that most companies that don't want California vehicles for prototypes. But if anyone knows a company out in the SF Bay Area looking for a 01 4.7 to use, let me know.

I just got my truck back from 4WheelParts and OH MY GOD! I never imagined my truck sounding so damn good. It feels like I've lost some torque tho. I think I should reset the PCM tonight. Also received my Airaid today (didn't have any problems with TruckPerformance) and I'll be installing that tonight as well.

That's because you allowed it to exhale but it didn't get any incoming air from the intake side. Get that AirAid on there, reset your PCM, and you should get your TQ back.

I am kind of new to this so excuse me if this is a stupid ?. How do you reset the PCM? Just reseat it. And what exactly does that do after you have the exhaust put on? I recently had the Dynomax superturbo with dual pipes installed and I noticed a loss of low end torque as well.

Okay, two things here.

First, your engine's gotta breathe correctly for you to get the optimum performance from it. To breathe correctly it needs to do the same thing you do. It needs to inhale to get the oxygen and fuel into the combustion chambers. Once the fuel is spent it needs to exhale the used gases out the other end. In your case, you inhale and exhale from the same place. Your engine doesn't. Inhaling requires taking in air from your intake through your TB, through your intake valves and into the combustion chamber. Ignition occurs, the fuel is burned, and the exhaust gases wait for the exhaust valve to open. Once that happens the gases flow out through the exhaust manifold through the Y-pipe, and through the catalytic converter. Once in the catlytic converter any unburned fuel is changed by the converter so it won't harm the outside air. The exhaust pulse continues on through the exhaust pipe and out the back end of your car. All of those areas contain restrictions for the air to go through. That's why people modify their powertrains. They want to make them more efficient and at the same time get more performance or power out of them.

When you put the cat back exhaust system on, you allowed your truck to exhale better but nothing was added to the intake side. When you're trying to exhale and there isn't enough air what happens. You start to run out of air. In your case, power. Adding an intake system like an AirAid will alleviate some of that. Not all, but some. Your TB is another source of restriction. Then, there's the heads and valves themselves. As you dig in further components become very expensive to modify. That's why most people do intake, TB, and cat back only.

The second part of this is the resetting of the PCM. The PCM is your powertrain control module or the computer that drives your car. Actually, it's the major computer. You have a couple others in there as well but they're all controlled by the PCM.

To reset the PCM:

1) Disconnect your negative battery cable.
2) Put your key in your ignition and tuen to START. Hold that position for 15 seconds.
3) Remove key.
4) Reconnect your negatove battery cable.
5) That's it. You're done.

thanks for the info Ron. I am waiting for the K&N to come out for the cold intake. I was just unsure of the PCM resetting. Thanks for the info and I am sure I will have more ?'s. This is a great site to find this kind of info. I knew virtually nothing about these trucks until I purchased mine a month ago and found this site. Now I know all about the breathing and everything to do for the cheapest price but didn't find a previous message for resetting the PCM. Once again thanks.

Got the Airaid on! Not a difficult part to install. Haven't taken it out for a spin yet tho.

Pros on the catback I gots:
Kick ass sound. Got so many looks on the way home. I managed to accidentally (seriously it was an accident) spin my tires while I was doing about 50mph down the freeway. Granted... the ground was wet, but DAMN. Accelerating from the light going straight then all of the sudden the the mph jumps +20mph and the back end fishtails. Had to look around to see if someone had just hit me. Very cool.

Bads:
This was a custom job from 4WheelParts. The welding is aweful. I think there's a leak in the weld infront of the muffler. The hangers they used were strips of metal bolted to the frame and welded to the pipes. The guy took his measurements wrong so now the left pipe is pushing against the spare tire. This causes the whole system to be a little angled to the left. I'll see if I can move that spare over 1/2" somehow.

I'm still grinning, but I'd have to recommend against the 4WheelParts custom job.

You also need to get that weld fixed. Any leaks in your exhaust system causes your exhaust pulses to go awry. What I mean by this is that for the most part exhaust systems including exhaust manifolds, headers, y-pipes, cat converters, and the exhaust pipe funnel the exhaust pulses in time out the back. Disturbing these pulses with a leaky exhaust system will rob you of power sometimes at the high end and sometimes at the low end depending on where the leak is and how bad it is.

Doesn't look like a fat leak. In fact I can't tell exactly where it's at. I let the truck sit and run for about 10 minutes then crawled under there and there was water? dripping from the pipe at the weld. This sound like a leak?

Unless you paid for stainless steel, I would take some high temp paint and spray the welded seems also so they don't rust.

Like I mentioned earlier, the Meineke shop that did mine was great, they started the truck and plugged the tailpipe with a hand, then another guy searched for leaks, when none were found, they sprayed all the welds and I was good to go. They should have at least done that. Now, for several days after, every time I drove, I got the unmistakable odor of welded metal but it went away after about a week.
