you might also look at the timing chain, there is a tsb on it. the fix is a new chain and gears and a timing chain tensioner

Well, It's been a year since bought my truck/posted this, and I just live with it...has not gotten any worse and still uses a quart of oil every 100-150 miles....has zero leaks though. Milage bites too...12-14mpg. I'm just going to drive it into the ground, then get a new block. It has 128K right now.
Anybody think it's worth fixing at this point?
Also---my honda's ac compressor made a clicking/nocking sound till I cut the belt--AC didn't work anyway. OH, and the fan clutch is A-OK.
Last comment...I tried moving the timming both ways, Knock stayed the same.
Later..

I know it's been a while from when this post was started but I have the exact same problem as you on my Jeep. I had a few questions about that. First being did you ever get it fixed? If not, did you have an automatic transmission? I'm thinking it boiling down to a few areas. Transmission (torque converter loose maybe) or flywheel loose or maybe even the timing chain loose. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks John
