Subject: 4.7L larger Oil filter
IP: Logged

Message:
If any one is interested in running a larger oil filter. The filter dodge used in the past will work on the 4.7L. Same base plate but its about a 1/3 larger than the stock filter they call for. Bosch # 3500, Fram # PH8A. You can cross for any other manufacture #. You do have to put about 1/4 quart more oil in at a oil change.

You can also use oil filters that are listed for the V10 engine, which are also bigger too.

Not sure of the fram part # but my friend back home has a 86 toyota pickup with the 4cyl and the PH-8A fram will fit on his also but when I used to work in a truck shop I got him a fram filter that fit but was even bigger than the 8A, I thought it said it held an extra 2 qts of oil but it may have been an extra qt not sure. Also don't know how much clearance is under the dakota and if it would allow a filter that long.

lol, duh, it's semesters week..

The Dakotas' filter has a pretty good area for clearance. The top of it is poined towards the ground without anything obstructing it -- at least on the 4.7.

WWWwwwwhhhhoooooaoaaaa there Silver!!!!!!!

Size DOESN'T always matter. WHAT are you guys thinking?

The 4.7 has a higher flow pump, and a 6 qt. sump!
Yea, did you know your 4.7 takes 6 quarts?? Probably not.

If you think for one minute that some 4 banger has the same flow requirements as the 4.7, I feel sorry for you.

come-on, you techies back me up here.

Yes I know my 4.7 takes 6 qts, I wasn't getting deeply involved in the extra oil topic I just wanted to add to those who were talking about it that fram has a bigger filter than the PH8A

You would run a FRAM filter? Have you seen any reports on those POS? It's got to be rated for the flow, for the money, it's WIX for my 4.7.

One of those relocated dual setups sound like they'd probably be a better investment. Anyone have any experience with these?

It kind of funny that everyone knocks Fram, i agree they might not be the best filter on the market, but when i go to boat races every other boat is using fram, and those guys have 2 - 3 engines and about 20 - 30k invested in each one. I have no issues with fram, and i'll continue to run them.

Likewise, In mags I see alot of HP cars and
trucks using Fram filters. I doubt for the money
that a dual filter set up would be worth it.
Your best bet is to change it often.

My dad has been using FRAM in all of his vehicles for as long as I remember, helping with oil changes when I was younger even. He changes the oil at 3000/3months on all the vehicles, which include: 1984 4x4 Toyota Pickup, 1995 GMC Sierra 1500, 1990 Toyota 4-Runner, 1995 Ford Escort. He had never had any problems with any of these vehicles. He runs, I believe Quaker State Semi-Synth most of the time -- which people also crucify in the opinion polls.

Lone Ranger, The number of cylinders an engine has nothing at all to do with required oil volume at the bearings or any part in the engine for that matter. Their are many 4 cylinder engines that use the same size filter as your 4.7 Dak. Their are even some that use larger filters then your Dak. The size of the filter has little to do flow and nothing to do with efficancy(sp). The size of the can allows more oil to be held in the system and in some cases it will allow for more forign matter to be held by the filter. A huge Fram will do you less good then my OEM size B34 Baldwin filter or the OEM size Purelator Purone or Mobil1.As far as the "My father always used it with out any problems" arguement hold no scientific proof. My Great Grandmother is 99 years old and has smoked since she was 12 and has never had any problems; No cancer, no emphasemy, no heart problems. She is still mentaly sharp as a tack but her bones are horrably brittle. Does this mean I should smoke 3 packs per-day??????? Do some research read all the post on oil filters. We are baseing our dislke for Fram based on independent measurements of internal componets!!! We are useing ASE and ASTM test results. We are useing real world experince based on the 100000's or cars we have serviced as Tech.'s and shade tree's. AC/Delco has volumes of case studies that show a direct link between valve train noise and Fram filters. You can get a AC/Delco for the same price as a Fram and it will do a much better job and still be an el-cheapo filter. You should go to the mini-mopar oil filter study!!!! A high reving 4 cylinder actualy requires more oil flow then and low rpm V8 to keep from cokeing the oil.

Damn I just thought I’d pass it on that there was a larger filter that would fit the 4.7L,(I used the same filter on my 3.9L) I didn’t mean to start a rumble. I can’t believe that people feel so strongly over oil filter manufactures. I just like the idea of getting a little more oil and filter material in there, after all the first order of engine oil is to remove heat, lubrication is a secondary function. So the more oil the better off you are. Keeping it clean is important too. I wish the manufactures would give us the real info like flow rates and what micron the filter is but then you would know what filter to buy and they would lose $$$$.

I use Fram also ,but I install and use the TG =TOUGH GUARD, this is one step up from the basic orange one. Better filter and a anti drain back valve. well worth the 5.00, I have been using Fram for 25 yrs, and my dad used Fram, no probs..

With all of the posts on this topic we realy should not have to re-hash this over and over again!!!It has been proven over and over again that Fram makes a sub-standard filter. It bugs me that people would spread mis-information like it is fact!!! It is easy to mis-lead those who do not know any better. I idea that someone is going to be puting a crappy filter on a $9000-$38,000 vechile based on misinformation turns my stomach. Again if you want to learn alot of filter try reading the minimopar oil filter study. I am sure someone here has the site handy. You might also want to try searching the internet for a site called something like... Everything You ever wanted to know about oil...

Try www.baldwinfilters.com 1)click on site map 2) click on catalog research 3) click on filter cross reference 4) select either OEM or Baldwin 5) hit enter This is the best cross refernce I have seen to date. Select one of the filters from the list and it will give you spec.'s and picture of filter. It will also give you all of the filters long and short that are in that same family of filters. Sorry I got so upset yesterday!!!

What would a bigger oil filter do for me? I have synthetic oil. Could I change the oil filter less? Would this provide better filtration? I was thinking of purchasing a SDF 15 (AMSOIL).This is a PH8A Fram size.

AMSOIL has an awesome remote filter set up and they also have the best By-Pass (ultra fine) oil filtration system in my book.

The system that they offer will increase your oil capacity by up to four quarts depending on the filter(s) that you use.
