I didn't bother drilling the hole. It is just to help the system bleed.

Wow,

I didn't put any hole in my T-stat. Here in the city of Houston/ and Galveston area, it gets really hot here, and I only have the electric fan.

What year/model? My 01 QC has no numbers at all on the gauge. Never gets to 1/2, and almost always stays around 1/3 of the way from cold. With no belt fan, only the stock elec fan. Maybe my 5spd runs colder?

A couple of things to check:

- Make sure that you did not install the 180 thermostat backwards. It is an easy mistake to do which will definitely cause the engine to run hot

- After installing the thermostat on the 4.7l engine, you may have to loosen the air bleed by the top of the radiator to let the air out of the system. If you did not do this, you could have an air poecket inside of your cooling system which can disrupt the coolant flow.

To fix this, wait until the engine is cool !
remove the radiator cap
loosen the air bleed screw.
Start the engine, and make sure that the coolant is flowing normally (after engine warms up)
Tighten the coolant air bleed
Put on the rad. cap

Hope this helps.
