Subject: Capacitive vs. Inductive ignition
IP: Logged

Message:
Of the Capacitive Discharge (i.e. MSD) and Inductive ignitions (Jacobs Omni Torquer), which one is the better application for a mildly modified engine that does not see a lot of high rpms?

What is the average mpg gains with the MSD. Also, do the MSD systems come with the fancy inline clips for splicing or is it cut/strip on the wires?

Sorry, getting cold feet on spending almost $200 on an ignition when I feel I don't know enough facts to make sure I am right. Doubt is a strong motivator.

Most people have the best luck with the MSD ones, though, even some of those went bad. MSD is really good about customer service, though, and they replace bad units quickly. You'll need the MSD 6A, $130, the Blaster SS coil, $40, and the universal wiring harness, $25. Summit Racing is about the best for pricing. You're still going to have to do some wire work to put the female clips on the wires you'll need to snip. If you don't have the 8.5 mm spark plug wires, you should get those too, $70. When you do change all this over, you should get new plugs, Autolite 3923's, gapped at .045, new distributor cap and rotor with brass connectors. Use dielectric grease on the wires, both ends and the connectors inside the cap. What should you expect to pick up, ~4hp. Your idle will really smooth out. IMO, it's worth it.

Thanks Ron. I have already changed everything within in the last 2 months in preparation (and because I got the MP PCM) but the wires. I have the Accel Super Coil and Napa Brass Cap/Rotor.

I was just reading on the Magnecor site and they had some info on the capacitive vs inductive ignitions that got me thinking.

Does the MSD come with the female clips or can I order them from Summit also?

It's cheaper to go to Home Depot for the clips. If I remember right the ones on the MSD are female, however, if you mount the MSD over on the left fender wall by the battery and you put your coil over by the right fender wall, you'll need both kinds of connectors because you'll need to extend the wires all the way around. At least that's what I did. I didn't want stuff draping over the engine. Now, if you can find room near your distributor, you can avoid that. You just have to find the wires from the coil back up there or you can extend the ones going to your current coil.

I planned on putting the MSD on the passenger side fender. I have a lot of room on that side since I am running the 14x3" K&N. Coil is on that side also.

Have you tried the IAT adjuster yet.
