The best/easiest source I know of is the 8.25" rear end out of an 89 Dakota Shelby-it has a limited-slip 3.90 set. But, get ready for the anti-loc brake light to come on and stay on since the sensor in the 89 rear end is not compatible with the 1990 anti-loc circuitry. Correct sensor is approx $80.00 from Mopar, and I heard a bear to replace-I have not done this step to my 90 Dakota yet. However, my long-bed 3.9 1990 runs well with the 3.90 gears-worth the swap even if I don't get to the anti-loc stuff.

Todd,
Thanks for giving me some info on this. I need someone to help me out who has been there before. It Would easier to just buy a new set of gears though right? I mean order some from ring-pinion.com or someone like that. Or do they not have any? Our 8 1/4 rear end is fairly common correct. So they should have em. I dont think Im gonna go with any limited slip application right now. Im starting my Junior year at my University and am also moving.
do you feel the cost and hassle was worth it? I am running 31 inch ATs on my truck and it has really zapped my power. So i am really thinking about 4.10s if I can find them. Thanks for the help. Please respond too.
Have a nice Sat.

Joe, you are probably right, it would be easier to find a good ring and pinion (possibly a 4.10 for sure if you're running those large tires) although it is something for an experienced mechanic to install-I've heard horror stories from my friend doing this stuff to his 5.0 Mustang. I thought I was taking the easiest and best way out by swapping the entire rear axle, leaf spring sets, brakes, everything, because my 90 Dakota had a 7.25" rear end, which to my knowledge, is not worth putting any money into, not to mention I needed new brakes, etc. I hope I don't sound redundant, but make sure you do indeed have an 8.25" rear end to begin with before ordering a ring and pinion, it was my knowledge that most V6 Dakotas in the 1st gen group had the wimpy 7.25" rears. If you have an 8.25", then get the gears like your talking, just be aware of the Anti-loc stuff I was talking about, and you'll have a satisfying swap. The best way to tell the 7.25 from the 8.25 (for me) is that the 7.25 has the casting of the center section shaped like the bottom of an octagon, (squared-like w/corners) while an 8.25 is rounded at the bottom. If there is anything else you think I can help you with, feel free to ask, I marked it to notify me when/if I get a reply. Todd
