How exactly does this work?
I've seen the hoods, does the air come in from the front vents and go directly into the intake(hence "ram air")?
Or does it come in the rear of the hood at the cowl? Or is this a different type of hood? I've seen some ram air hoods with some sort of intake "thing" at the cowl.

The setup where the air go's in at the cowl is cowl induction and although it is similer to ram air is not.

Cowl induction takes advantage of the high presure air hitting the base of the windshield. Because there is little resistance at the opening at the back of a cowl induction hood, some of the air is forced in there.

Ram air literally places an intake into the airstream to scoop up and channel colder air through a free flowing filter, and then into the carb or throttle body...so on and so forth. Ram air does have some very good performance applications, and it will help out in overall HP, but in street applications it's not living up to it's full performance potential. It does look good, and it does work.

Huh oh, we have beat this horse before... pretty much ram is is great but nobody makes a true ram air hood for the Dakota, and they don't work anyway at the speeds you Dakota lives it life at. All of the hoods out there are cold air hoods, not so much ram air hoods. And yes, the cold air hoods help a ton, but then again so does a K&N gen II for a lot less. The cowl intake is what nascar uses for a reason, it works just as well as any scoop facing the front, maybe better as it doesn't have to add to the car's drag to achive the high pressure area. It just uses a naturally occuring high pressure area. I still say that in all applications I have seen here the hood setups are nothing more then cold air, not ram air.

GTS makes a ram-air hood. You can see it on speedtweaks.

Troy,
What Hersbird and I are saying is that it's not really a true "Ram Air" system because you will never drive fast enough (or shouldn't drive fast enough) to acheive the true definition of "Ram Air". At most you will get a nice breath of fresh, colder air into your TB/Carb. What makes Ram Air really perform is a high intake velocity (which only comes from high speed).

Have to agree that the "Ram Air" terminology is kicked around rather loosely, but there is a lot to be said for free-flowing, [true] cold-air intake setups.

I noticed a little difference with the old homebrew intake & 9" K&N cone filter, but there was a rather drastic improvement once I got the Shaker installed.

But does anybody have real back to back track testing of the K&N gen II with the heat shield compared to a shaker? The heat shield is the difference between the home-brews and the true "cold air" under hood kits. At best I bet it's a 5hp difference and it's not due to "ram" air but just a better "colder" air then sucking from besides the radiator. Don't get me wrong I love the shaker but it's all about awesome looks and a good cold air system.

Halo3, that's a good looking truck you got there. That hood is for the 4.7L, right? I'm only assuming this, but since it's a QC truck, I also assume it's a 4.7L. Either way, it looks good with the silver. I'm not sure my red would go to well, but then again...

Thanks, Demon.

It is actually a 5.9L. I ended up painting the scoop the 2001 Graphite color to get the contrast. I was a little disappointed at first, as the paint chip looked like it was darker. But, it has grown on me.

Not sure what to tell you about your red. I've seen a Durango with the Shaker hood, and it's owner painted the whole thing red...scoop & hood. It doesn't look too bad, but it does seem a little monotone...IMO.

The Proglass Shaker hood was good for ~ 0.27 sec 0-60 and ~ 0.31 sec / 2.6 MPH in the 1/4mi (avg of 3 G-tech runs before and after) on my '99 CC R/T (stock motor otherwise). And I was carying 1/2 tank more gas and it was about 20 deg warmer w/ the runs w/ the shaker. On a ~4200+ lb truck that's gotta be worth 25-30HP over the stock airbox (or, you can think of the stock airbox as choking off 25-30HP).

Proglass makes the shaker hood for 5.2/5.9L, 4.7L and even 3.9L V6 Daks. While alot more expensive than a FIPK, it's at least as effective (shorter path for cooler outside air) and looks ALOT better!! :)
