I have a '00 4.7L 5spd CC SLT LSD 2wd. Being that I have a 5spd I have a 2 piece driveshaft. My questions are:

Does anyone know where I can find out the EXACT length of the second piece of my drive shaft? The FIRST piece appears to be fixed with a moving shaft inside a fixed shaft attached to the frame. The SECOND piece of the shaft is like a normal drive shaft.

Also, what material are both shafts made of (i.e. aluminum, steel, tungsten, etc.).

Last but not least does anyone know how much the second piece of the driveshaft weighs?

Any help would be appreciated.

I doubt it's tungsten. Might be a bit too heavy. Just fabricate a carbon fiber replaceemnt for it :) Should help you spin up much faster! :-)

I know you were being sarcastic. That's why I put smiley faces on my messages. But a carbon fiber shaft would really kick butt. I know of no one that has one right now. Would definitely be an interesting performance addition. Having a lightened flywheel would also greatly benefit this truck.

There is a company in Clearwater, Fl. that does custom carbon fiber driveshafts. They told me to get them some measurements and they would give me some pricing info. This is why I need EXACT measurements. A lighter flywheel would be cool too. I'll look into it.

I thought that they couldn't do a one piece because of the distance between the tranny and the diff. I thought that a single shaft would be too wobbly.

What was the measured distance on yours? Center of U joint to Center of U joint?

I'm sure I could get a one piece carbon fiber.

Anyone...measurements?

As far as I know they are made of plain old steel. The driveshaft shop should give you detailed instructions on how they want it measured. No idea on weight. The carbon fiber ones are very pricy from what I have heard. Like well over a $1000 US.

These are the instructions they gave me. Thing is...I'm looking for some exact factory measurements. I'd hate to give them a measurement that is even a little off. Plus it would be cool if I could do a single shaft rather than a 2 piece that I have now.

Was I correct in my discription from my first post?

CThomp- be careful here. A one piece shaft is a possibility here, but you have to tell them everything. The reason they don't come from the factory as a one-piece shaft is that as you reach higher rpms, that single shaft will begin to flex (think of a long piece of rebar.... stiff and solid at 3' long, but pretty squiggly at 7' long).

I investigated this possbility on my Gen II with a driveshaft shop, and the head engineer at this place told me that a one-piece was possible because I was only spinning the motor to 5200 rpm in 4th gear (1:1). But, he said anything much higher, and it will begin to at least vibrate, if not flex.

The center to center measurement that you need to tell this company is from the u-joint on the back of the gear box to the u-joint on the front of the pumpkin. This will scare them at first, but you should explain that it is currently a 2-piece shaft with a carrier bearing.

The accuracy of this measurement will be okay if you get it within 1/16" more or less. The front of the driveshaft that goes into the gearbox has a long splined yoke, and there is a certain amount of travel in the shaft. It basically slides in & out of the yoke on the back of the tranny. PST will tell you if it needs to be more accurate than that.

I have a FSM at home, but I am headed out of town this weekend. Otherwise I could tell you (if the spec is in there).

LONG WHEEL BASE REG CAB. 123 INCH I THINK. MY TWO PIECE SHAFT WAS NOT VERY BIG AROUND BUT THE ONE PIECE IS HUGE DUE TO ANGLE I THINK.. BUT SURE MADE A DIFFERANCE. LOCAL DEALER ONLT HAD TRUCK 2 DAYS SO THEY MIGHT HAVE HAD IT MADE LOCALY...
