 Subject: Rear Sway Bar

I recently purchased the 4.7 4x2 Quad Cab w/the tire and handling group. This group includes a rather thin rear sway bar. I notice a decent amount of body roll even w/the bar and after adding es9000 Procomp Shocks. Would a beefier sway bar such as the Hellwig perform better than the factory bar? thanks....

A couple things to remember when modifying anti-roll bars:
1. Going with stiffer bars will not only reduce body roll (good), but they also make one-wheel bumps feel larger (bad) by not allowing the suspension to absorb the bump.
2. Just stiffening the bar at one end of the truck will affect the handling balance. Most manufacturers will use the bars primarily to set up the vehicle's handling balance to provide a safe level of understeer. A stiffer front bar will increase understeer, and a stiffer rear will increase oversteer (or decrease understeer). Since most vehicles today are biased towards understeer, just going for a slightly stiffer rear bar will simply decrease understeer. But a much stiffer rear bar with no change to the front may make the truck unstable in hard cornering.
In other words, choose your bars carefully so you don't wind up with a truly evil-handling truck. If you want to stiffen one end, don't forget to stiffen the other end a more or less similar amount, keeping in mind whether you want the vehicle to understeer, be relatively neutral, or be a tail-happy beast.

If you're carrying heavy loads in the rear...yes, it will help. But Dan is correct with the handling characteristics as well. Be careful with the swaybar sizes. I run a Helwig with a stock fron bar and haven't noticed any handling problems...and I am running the ProComp ES9000's. (But I also have 200lbs in the back - toolbox with tools, fluids, and tow gear.)
