Subject: Excessive Downshifting!
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 94 with a 3.9 4x4 Club Cab. On most hills the truck with not hold its speed and downshifts out of OD into third. This is very annoying and makes the cruise control useless.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Don't use OD when towing a big trailer in hills!!!! It's only a V6.

A V8 with 400lb at the rear tires will tow anything but a v6 needs to downshift to pull a load!!

Buy a S10 and see if it can run in overdrive with a jet ski on the back.

You are never to use OD when towing, hauling heavy loads, or offroading -- usually a sticker somewhere on the vehicle will say that (door panel?).

Poor lil V6..

Thanks for the towing tips, but I'm not towing anything. The truck will not pull its own weight up the hill without downshifting.

Is this normal for the V-6 with automatic? I had other V-6 and I don't remember it being as much of a problem.

My '99 dak auto can go up hills just fine without downshifting constantly. Maybe you need your tranny looked at?

Err, doh, I read the lot of ACE's posts and thought he was towing, sorry. Well, it shouldn't be doing that and there is something wrong. My parent's '90 4-Runner did that for a while, but I don't remember what they did, or had done, to fix it. I'll ask though..

Where do you live? On trips I've found that altitude can have a big effect on the shift patterns of an AT going up hills. I live in Indiana and vacation in North Carolina and I notice during the drive that the truck can climb longer steeper hills in the low lands with no downshifting but need to downshift for flatter, shorter hills in the upper alts.

I have the 3.55 rear end. Considering a used 3.90 for $650. I have 4X4. Can you change the rear and not change the front ratio also?

It's a lot to spend with labor if it doesn't help!
