Subject: I raced an R/T This past Saturday....

I have a buddy with a Red 5.9 R/T, lowered with many mods.. He has the 4/6 lowering kit on it. True dual exhaust using dynomax mufflers with no cats, big throttle body, cold air induction kit, and he says it had lower gears than the 3.92's in it, like 4.30's, but I don't know for sure.

He had been hearing a lot of noise about the 4.7L being pretty quick, and he wanted to just see what mine could do.

I finally agreed to race him, no big deal..

We went from a 10 roll, and the first race, he jumped the start by about a good length and a half, but what the heck, I figured I would try to play catch-up. I couldn't catch him, and he couldn't leave me. We had seemingly perfect similarities of acceleration and speed.

The second race, I ground gears going into second for some reason, never done it before, never knew why it happened that time; I wasn't nervous. I have raced a lot on the street in much faster vehicles than my truck.

Finally, We got an even race on the third time. WE both took off at almost the exact same time, but he jumped me by just a little bit ( about a fender length). I did my best at driving the hell out of my little truck, but I couldn't beat him and he couldn't leave me. We were absolutely dead-even till about 105mph when we let off. I think he was really surprised. We went and parked and I let him drive my truck and he took me for a ride in his. He seemed impressed with my little 4.7L, especially in 3rd and 4th gear acceleration.

He mentioned that he was always running away from our other friend (who by the way has one of the most awesome looking Dakota R/T's I have ever seen)who has similar mods done to his truck as this red one.

So, I guess my completely stock 4.7L/5spd RC 3.92lsd dakota did pretty good considering the competition.

It makes me even more eager to hurry up and get my HO cams installed and fit a cold air induction setup to the intake. I also want to change the spark plugs and thermostat and relocate the IAT sensor.

I think with these mods, I should be beating on the R/T's for about 3 or 4 carlengths (hopefully), if not more... ;)

No offense to R/T guys, I love the trucks guys, just telling what happened to me...

Now, If I could just find a Ford Lightning supercharger and intercooler setup and install that on the 4.7L....hmmmmm....I love boost!!!!!

4.7's rule/ 5.9's drool..... ;)

Later,
Ryan

The only gears available for the 9.25" rear end (above the factory 3.92) is 4.10 and 4.56 (you can go higher but that's insane) - lots of people are wishing there was an easy 4.30 set available.

Is your buddy's R/T a CC or RC? The difference in weight along with you having a 5-speed is why you could hang with him.

Engine to Engine, the 5.9L has more power and (currently) has more go-fast parts. Maybe if they ever put the 5.7L Hemi in a Dakota with a 5-speed, we'll all enjoy the best of both worlds.

I'm probably gonna sound real dumb w/ this post but I've seen alot of guys state stuff about the 5-speed...well its a 5-speed thats the reason its so fast. I can understand if its a long term race to where you'd need 5 whole gears to reach speeds over 140 or 150. But at the strip I don't even use 4th gear I just keep it punched in 3rd and by the time the 1/4 is up I'm almost to the rev limiter in 3rd. So what exactly does a 5 speed have to do w/ anything? Maybe in that race where they hit 105 they'd need 4th but if your planning on pulling hard you'd want the MAX rpm's out of each gear and I know at 105mph its not even close to the rev limiter in 4th at 105.

Only thing I see useful about a 5 speed is for gas mileage purposes and like I said high top speeds over 140-150.

Maybe someone can explain it to me.

The 5-speed or manual transmission does not waste as much HP as the auto (less drivetrain loss). Plus you get the advantage of the clutch, building up rpms to launch.

The fact that it has a 5th gear isn't really important.

To launch an auto just hold your foot on the gas at a certain RPM's and I manually shift mine in a race to get all the max rpm's I need. Works good for me.

I know how to launch at auto, you can just control things a little better with a clutch. Seems like once my foot comes off the brake all hell brakes loose. Must be a 5.9L thing, right!

A manual transmission's 1st/2nd gear has better launching ratios than an automatic tranny's 1st/2nd. You also get more control over putting your power to the ground, both in launches and holding a gear to desired rpm's. The only disadvantage that a manual has is if you miss a gear, and they usually can't handle as much maximum power (the Dakota 5-speed is only rated to 350lbs of torque, which is why they didn't put it in the R/T)

3 or 4 car lengths? Don't count on it. On most cars a car length is about 3/4 of a second. So a car length is a big deal. So if you are tied with an R/T as I find myself, then adding those parts might give you half car length or maybe a whole one if lucky. But not much more. They are just cams, not a blower. And a 5spd makes an engine more efficient because it keeps the revs in the peak hp range more consistently as you shift. When moving up a gear the revs only drop 800rpm instead of an auto's 1000 rpm, those numbers are just for examples.
