Subject: kennebell optimizerII response.
IP: Logged

Message:
I have contacted kennebell about getting some more horsepower from my truck by running a more aggressive spark advance and possibly fuel tuning the engine to my mods. here is there response

Matt:

The program can of course be tweaked for more spark, but here's how it works:

Stock Program: Tuned to run 87 octane safely.

Kenne Bell Program: Tuned to run at MBT (maximum brake torque) spark.

This means that no matter what octane (as far as spark is concerned), there is no further benefit to advancing spark, because we are at the engine's maximum torque output. By advancing the spark even further beyond MBT, there can be diminishing returns (loss of HP).

There are some added benefits to leaning the fuel curve some more (+5 to 10 more HP), but you would need to run the octane booster all the time if you want us to do that. There would be a $149 fee for reprogramming.

Regards,

Tech Dept.

Now for my next mod I'm going back and forth between doing the h.o cams or further fuel tuning the engine myself with some sort of fuel management system, something like a roe-racing engine controller or an apexi afc controller.
I really want to see if the apexi will work because I used to use one on my svt contour and absolutely loved it.however the cams will probable make a little more power.

bernd- wasn't there a trick of moving the map sensor pickup from it's current location to the brake booster to lean the engine out a bit? I'd like to try this and see if it works.

That trick was for the 3.9 5.2 and 5.9. The 4.7 had the map sensor right in the intake already for good response.

So with the kenne bell do you have to run 92 octane?

KB + MBT = BS?
IP: Logged

Message:
I don't think I would take that response from the tech department at KB as being gospel. They make it sound like the ignition advance is static or fixed at a certain amount and that's that. The truth is that it changes depending upon load, temp, throttle position and rpms. How much advance the engine sees at each different time/loading is way more important than the total advance permitted. I would love to see a dyno sheet for a NA 4.7 that's been tuned by KB to MBT. My guess is that the statement by KB about MBT is more BS than anything else. What exactly do they mean by tuned to the engine's maximum torque output? I especially love that part about leaning the fuel cuve a little more to make an extra 5-10 hp for an extra $149! hahaha The next time I go to sell something to somebody I'll ask them if they just want the so-so version or would they like the really good one? hahaha It doesn't take any more for them to upload the program with additional timing than it does to load the non-aggressive one. These guys that flash these computers work so hard to make it sound all mysterious or like it's so far above the mere mortal. People have been playing with fuel and timing every since engines first started running!

Duner...what do you think about the ASE chip?
I have been seriously considering having it put
in, but am not sure how much it would really
improve things....my HO cams and Ho
manifold should be installed pretty soon, so
with the extra mods, do you think it would
make that much difference?

HO cams, HO intake manifold, and sure grip

I don't really know anything about the ASE chip other than what people have said online. I'm sure it would be an improvement.... but how much is something I just don't know.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

thanx, BTW, did you ever do the HO cam
install with that beast? and have the R/T
nationals been and gone, I heard you were
going to compete against Bernds TT setup...

I have a set of HO cams on order.... due to popular demand, they are on national backorder.

The R/T Nationals were this last weekend. I had a GREAT time! The turbo'd 4.7 held it's own quite nicely against some of the baddest R/Ts around. Out of more than 100 trucks in attendance, only 4 of them managed to outrun me on the dragstrip. Bernd wasn't able to make it with the TT R/T (check his website for details). I guess we'll have to try and meet up again some other time.....

Duner, I know that you have said that who did your computer is not doing them anymore; who would you have do yours now if you had a basically stock truck?

CW I run 87-89 depending on the money in my pocket but i have never heard a ping from my engine.

Duner I am not taking it as gospel. I'm just wondering if it would be more benefical to tune my ignition greater via the icon controller or to get some kind of fuel controller and tune that. there must be more timing available if I ran say 110octane at the track.

Since the cams are on back order to I think I'll try something else, some kind of piggyback system to further optimize the engine or I might check into extrude honing the intake/h.o. intake manifold.

conig - I think anything you can do to get control over your timing and fuel is a good thing. I don't think extrude honing is a possibility for that intake, or would even make any difference. The port/runner dimensions are already generous for the size engine we have. The problem is runner length vs plenum area. This manifold is designed to build torque not necessarily horsepower.

D - I don't know whether Leach is able to do the '01s. I would give him a call and ask him. My friendly Mopar parts man told me last week that the cams were on National backorder.... and that he had an order in for 60 sets! I will be seeing him tomorrow morning so I'll ask him when to expect my new toys. When did you order yours and when did you get them?

Ordered my cams on 5-29-02. The parts guy
let me look at his computer. There were 5 sets
in Texas and that was it. I got mine within 10
days. I must have gotten one of the five sets.
Good Luck

I visit ceg all the time for some new ideas on getting power. it's a very good forum. No the 95 se belongs to a friend of mine and the 98svt(really miss that car) was totalled out from the fire. I keep hoping to get another tour but there out of my price range for a second car.

I posted once a while back. newbies always ask the same questions over at ceg lol. it's nice it doesn't make me feel like much has changed.
