Subject: CW crank position senor 4.7l ????
IP: Logged

Message:
Since the 4.7l crankposition sensor can not be moved to modify base ignition timing, hoe does the sensor send the signal to the engine? since it is not constant can it somehow be manipulated with eather a resistor, capacitor, or other device to advance the timing,or so the computer reads it moderately different so it sees a false signal that would cause it to advance/ retard the ignition timing?

all info is available I wish I had a shop manual to veiw this myself.

It sends a 5 volt square wave to the computer, with that wave starting at somewhere in the visinity of 60° before TDC. The computer see this reading compares it to all the other sensors then decides when to fire the plug. All a resistor would do is lower the voltage setting a code.

I have already looked at adjusting the sensor and that is a no go as it is cast into the block. The only thing I can see to make the timing adjustable is the Icon Ignition Controller. Not exactly sure how it works but it plays with the crank sensor reading to advance the timing.

Thats the sensor that went bad on my 4.7 It would turn over , but not start. After about 5 minutes sitting there , the truck would start. Only happened twice , and was fixed under warrinty(thank God) Thats one I don't think I'll mess with. C.W , you ever hear of any more of these going bad?

I have seen a couple but very few and far between. They usualy set a code if they quit working all together at one point.

thats what I thought to bad there isn't a way to increase the voltage, that has to be what the icon does. to bad i'm low on cash. I may just see if kenne-bell can give me a more aggresive pcm flash.

It foold the computer into fireing earlier by giving it a false pattern. Has nothing to do with voltage.:)
