2001 Dakota 4.7 Auto w/3.55 gears and 38,000 miles…

About 1000 miles ago, I installed a 360AirIntakez…

The response in the mid range is greatly improved (and I love the sound), but I noticed that when I floor it from a dead stop, the truck no longer leaves rubber, but instead it sounds like it bogs a little… It still pulls well through the RPM range, but I miss the low end punch...

>>Is this a result of getting TOO much air?
>>Would a freer flowing exhaust fix this?

ive got about the same setup as you do...also with a 360...i did notice the loss in the low-end as well. however, the pull after about 3500 rpm's is greatly increased. ive been told that the addition of a catback and a wider throttle body could bring the low end back....but again, that is just what ive been told. we will have to see what happens

I noticed the same thing the other day. Had my itnake on for a couple weeks, and Havnt really tried to spin the tires, but I was at a light with a ricer, and punched it and the thing seemed slow as hell! pissed me off.. Prob. better though, tires are expensive!

Hey, I've been there and done that. I went with the 4in z-tube and 70mm tb to get more low end power and torque since I tow quite a bit. Well let me say that you'll notice more gained power in the dollar invested at a .001% interest rate than that combo. It will rob you of low end power, which is where I need it most. I have even talked to Tom at Speedtweaks and bruce at F&B and they concure that for low end, a stock muffler setup with the new 4.7L cams and lower gearing are about your only choices, besides superchargin' it. For some reason, these engines don't deliver tons down low, it's best to leave it be and really research your aftermarket parts.

The 4.7 engine is not going to have the low end of the 5.2 or 5.9 - it does not have the displacement to do that. To get the same HP as the 5.2 the 4.7 spins faster - this reduced low end is typical of cammer engines in curent vehicles vs pushrod engines. Overall performance is about the same, just a different method of getting there.

To make up for the lack of displacement the factory gives the tranny a lower first gear, but for max performance a higher numerical rear end ratio is needed....but this can hurt mileage. Just spin that cammer up a bit and enjoy the power at high engine speeds.

The GP GTP is a fast car, low 15s to high 14s in the 1/4 mile - you'll have to go some to be able to catch that with a 4x4. The drop-in filter is almost worthless for performance...you probably won't feel anything. The K&N cold air intake does make a big difference in the GenIII trucks - I don't know about the GenIIs.

What do you consider "big bucks"? A new or ported TB will help with throttle respponse and make the truck more fun to drive. A MP PCM will help wake it up too. A low restriction cat-back exhaust helps. New plugs and cap and rotor will get you back a small amount of hp if the ones you have now are worn. Speed costs money...
