 Subject: '97 360 power loss

Been looking in the archives for an answer to my problem, but with little resultes. Have a 1997 360 90,000+ miles that has lost power around 1700 rpm & up. About 6 months ago the "cat" starting rattling. Does anyone think that it has clogged up the exhaust? Fuel mileage has not changed, plug signs are a little on the lean side (white like new ones).If so, what is a good aftermaket part to replace it with. Thanks

That's a pretty unique 97 Dakota if it has a 360 in it. It's probably a 318. As for the loss of power, a basic tune up might get you by. I think you would notice a significant decrease in fuel mileage if you cat was plugged. Check the cap and rotor and maybe the plug wires too. If there are Champion plugs in there, toss them as far as you can and get some autolites 5224 or 3923's. Give the TB a good cleaning too. I'm sure the air filter is fine but I've overlooked that before.

Replace the cat. If it rattles it is done and causing loss of power, poor fuel economy, stuff like that.
