I was lookin at these on the truckperformance.com site and noticed it says "allows driver-controlled shifts". Is this referring to an automatic tranny? And if so, how does the driver control it exactly?

I had one in my 96 camaro with an automatic, and it shifted so well that I never needed to shift it myself. I highly recomend them.

I strongly recommend you get it! There are other benefits besides firming up your shifts by reducing trans slippage. It also delays torque converter lock-up, and it comes out of lock-up with just a light squeeze on the accelerator.

lol, well I don't even have my dakota yet, I'm just reseearching mods and stuff now because I'm on a tight budget (mainly do to audio) and I gotta make damn sure the thigns I buy I am happy with, ya know?

About the controllable shifting though, I'm just curious about that one, HOW do you control it?? Just by using the shift stick on the steering colum? :)

Also, I'm new to engines, I'm learning a lot and getting less scared to take stuff apart, but I still don't know a lot since the past 8 months have been spent learning everything my brain can possibly hold for car audio competition, so that said, what exactly is the torque converter? And how/why does it lock up?

The TC is a fluid coupling that takes the place of a clutch on an auto-trannied vehicle. It also gives you the added bonus of "torque mutiplication", but explaining that can make for a lengthy post.

A lock-up convertor is one that gives you a solid coupling, usually at 40-45 mph. It improves your gas milage by reducing slippage, which is inherit in non lock-up TCs. Having it lock-up too early is similar to lugging your engine.

Also, the stock set up in the 500 and 518 transmissions allows the TC to stay locked under part-throttle, which means you have to put your foot into it to under what are otherwise 'normal' driving conditions, such as climbing hills at highway speeds. The Transgo kit rectifies this.

BTW, are you ordering your Dak, or buying it used? The reason I'm asking, is because I beleive that a kit for the 4.7 automatics isn't available yet.

Sorry, Waltherone (PPK?), but I forget to answer the first part of your question.

Yes, it allows you more control when you shift it "manually", but I recommend you just leave it in drive. There are springs that control the shift points, so you can leave it in Drive and have the tranny shift at higher RPMs then the stock 4600 on the 5.2s and 5.9s.

Note: If you install an MP PCM, it will shift higher, like around 5200 or so RPMs, without the shiftkit.

I'm sure you'll find the following site informative: http://www.dakotart.com/faqarticles/transgo_shift_kit_install/page1.htm

If I get the aftermarket pcm than firms up the shifts, do I still need the shift kit?

FastD, the "Street/Strip" setting is what you want. Also, turning up the line pressure will make it shift hard enough to break the tires loose on the 1-2 upshift.

Eazy, I would get the shift-kit as well, simply because it helps prolong your transmission's life.

Bud, you can just replace the stock cat with a freer flowing aftermarket model to remain legal. If you must remove the cat, you have to install the O2 sensors in the exhaust piping. It will probably still throw a code though. The precat sensor helps the PCM determine where the fuel mixture needs to be and the one after the cat monitors the cats efficiency. So if the two sensors read the same the PCM will think there is a problem with the cat.

On another note, instead of draggin up a 7 year old post that has nothing to do with your problem, just start a new post of your own.

bud - if it really is the third cat you are reomoving like the other guy, there shouldn't be an issue. On the three cat set up, the sensors are on the two precats. Since you claim to be having an issue with this, I suspect you haven't accurately described what you are doing ? I second daddio's opinion about starting your own thread.
