I've been checking this site out from time to time for about six months now and have not once read anything about weight reduction! Take a lesson from the "ricer" crowd and start cutting some weight off your dak. Remember, the rule of thumb in drag racing is every 100lbs is worth approx. a tenth of a sec. in the quarter.

Spare tyre at the track is about all I can reccommend, but other than that, it's just plain pathetic. Also, 100 pounds can fück a ricer up in time more than it can my truck -- but still marginal for that ricer.

Don't bother with weight reduction, these trucks are built tough for a reason. If you are going to start with some weight reduction, start by taking off them chrome dubs :)

My lesson from ricers is not to buy a girl's car.

Not exactly, although I did gain almost a half second in the quarter by kicking my mom and girlfriend outta my Dak!

xplikt, There are a ton of mods you can do. Talk to any old school drag racer and they'll tell ya. You could start with fiberglass hoods, roll pans, or bumpers. Relocate the battery to the bed, and/or unbolt/remove the front sway bar at the track to help weight transfer. Also, as you mentioned, remove the spare and jack. You could remove the pass. seat and center console when you want to race. Last but not least, run with as little fuel as possible, at approx. 7lbs per gallon fuel's heavy.

Take the tailgate off at the track too, get a
tonneau cover(the help in wind resistance
negates any weight the tonneau has), replace
the stock battery with an optima that will save
you about 5-10 lbs, get rid of the big hunky
wheels and big damn tires and go for somee
17 inch lw alloys and some low profile tires
(improves gear ratio for draggin and
remember that 10 lbs of rotating mass is
equal to 100 lbs of static mass which means
that if you drop 10 lbs of each wheel then you
shave a good couple tenths off your time).

"My lesson from ricers is not to buy a girl's car." Dead on xplikt! What is the point in making your mom's Honda "quick"? Why not get a quick car to begin with and go from there. Its common sense to me, the rice crowd just does not get it. I caught hell all thru college for having a modded SHO with 220hp stock, even with 300 hp and corvette handling I still got sh!t on. But as soon as a lowered Civic would come around the corner, everyone noticed it. Screw that I could blow his doors off stock. That's why I love my Dakota, bad a$$ speed from the factory. So what if I got a 100 Lb sub in the cab, my truck doesn't care. It just says I have torque and I don't notice it. Why anyone would want a car that is slower with a loaf of bread in the back seat is beyond me. Screw them. Damn, I'm angry. 2002 4.7L 5spd

How bought if you just strip the truck down to the engine, drive train, a seat, and the tires and rims? Gimme a break guys. Run it like you would on the street. Thats the true test.

I've heard that you can drop about three quarters of a second if you pry the Metros and Civics out of the grill. The weight starts to add up after a couple of months. :)

Only ones who would really benefit from weight reduction would be the ones who race their DAK'S every weekend and drive something else during the week. (But these people have already done this)

Those who race whenever they can, ( like me )it's usually too much work to remove all dead weight Friday afternoon and put everything back on Sunday night to get back to work Monday morning.

That's just my opinion,

100lbs = 1/10 only goes so far. Power to Weight is what you need to look at...and more power to less weight works better than same power/less weight.

That's the way to do it, show 'em what trucks are made of. Go down the track with a bale of hay or a load of wood! Hell, race with the civic hooked to the back of you... hehe.

You could also reduce weight and imporve performance by taking the muffler off and running a straight pipe out of the catalytic converter.

You could just buy a supercharger, but still those guys are constantly doing "free" stuff to go faster too, it doesn't matter how fast your truck is, it ain't fast enough!

Hersbird is right, it wouldn't matter if I was making 600 hp.... I would still pull the clutch fan and run a short belt. I will do every single thing I can think of to make it go faster when I'm at the track.
