Possibly someone to help muscle the Y-pipe into place. I just used a bottle jack on mine to get the pipe where i wanted it

Go ahead and spray lubricant on all your bolts. It will help allot. (WD-40 etc)
If you have a decent set of basic hand tools that should be enough. And a friend to help.

Maybe some Bandaid's.

Man please get a big azz can of Liquid wrench and spary that stuff all down 2-3 days in advance and everyday in between. And make sure you thread loc is high temp "red" stuff. My mechanic, who drags a 9 sec. chevelle that runs over 950 HP told me to use grade 8 bolts of course, and use lock washers to keep the boltz from loosening. I thought it was wierd, BUT IT HAS WORKED!!! And a crate of patience. Good Luck. you can do it.

Has anyone else seen the header bolts in Summit that have a special washe with a flat spot on it and a hex center? The bolt heads have groves cut in them for E clips so the washer binds against the header tubes and is keyed to the bolt. They look like they would work great, but i don't want to be the first to try them. Maybe i'll make a set... hmmm

Geoff,

Let's se if can remember (and please anyone can correct me) 7/16 open end wrench, 9/16 (or 1/2?)wrench and deep sockets. The torque wrench, I used on only 2 headers bolts. I used a universal connector for the sockets to work around the pre cats on my '01 dak. I didn't have too much trouble with the y pipe (I have a manual tranny). Place the passenger side first. I used silicon Hi temp copper RTV between the headers and the y pipe. If you are working by yourself, place the one of the stock stud (not tight) in one middle holes to guild or help with header install. Once you get the one the JBA header bolts on, you remove the the stud. Removing the spark plug heat shields can help when tightening the headers bolts. I used the stock manifold to pipe bolts with bolts clips. (don't know if this was a good idea but helped hold the bolt in place while I tighten the bolts.) The JBA bolts were really tight and over came the holding clips. You can try and stick a wrench up there to hold the bolt if you don't use the holding clips (I removed the oil filter for more room). Try a lube on the JBA bolt. After install run the engine and then cool down and retighten. I did this about 3 or 4 times. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Well i think it will go well the headers will arrive tuesday so as advised i started lubing all the bolts and studs with NON-flammable Liquid Wrench. Then for sh!ts and giggles i got a wrench, ratchet, and some sockets to try the bolts/nuts. They all broke free!!! only problem was the P/S Y-pipe connection. The retaining clips that stop the bolt heads from turning gave up the cause, one side was no problem i got a wrench on it and it was good to go. The other side was more of a pain though, the clip did not break off and prevented me from getting a wrench or socket on it so i used visegrips. Glad i know all the fastners are at least going to come off. And from what i hear getting all those off is half the battle

Your so right. I actually had all my studs removed. I did not like having to dick around with the different bolts/nuts/etc. So I have all the studs removed and replaced all the holes with bolts. Have had no probs. But on a Gen I. But maybe it would work on your Gen3. Good Luck though. And take your time with the gaskets. Get them right the first time. I hurried through it and had to pull the pass. header off cuz of an exhaust leak. Boy did that suck. And I have been told not to use gasket sealant on headers. My mechanic said if you got too much on them, they could actually help blow the gasket. Good luck.

I've had my JBA's sitting around for a couple of weeks, but weather & time have kept me from doing the install...

For those that have done a JBA header install on a 5.9L, was there any big clearance issues in getting the new headers put in place? Were you able to come from the top down, or did you have to go from the bottom up?

i put them in on my 5.2 (same thing as the 5.9 on the outside) and they went in really easy. the only thing i had to do was, remove the top bolt on the coil and swing it out of the way.

i installed them from the top of the engine. good luck with putting the bolts in tough, they are a BITCH!!
