Subject: clutch fan removal HELP!!

Message:
Can anyone tell me what to do about getting the factory clutch fan off? I have a 2000 5.9L. I have tried everything to get the big 1-7/16" nut off, and can't get it. The pulley on the water pump just keeps turning. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this nut standard or reverse threads? I understood that it was standard threads, but I can't get it loose. When facing the windshield, I am turning the wrench to the left: is this correct?

Well TML,
I took it off my 2000 3.9 and it was easy.
I took the shroud off( two nuts and a plastic clip)
then put a wrench on the nut and bumped it to the
left while holding the fan or belt( one of those) don't remember.:)

It came off real easy. Good luck

Will

You could go to AutoZone and rest the FORD :( fan clutch removal tool .... it will fit the bid nut on the back on the fan clutch. Then all you have to do is wedge the waterpump pully from moving

Mine's been off for awhile now, got the 4.7, use the factory elec fan, live in HOuston/Galveston TX.

If it get's too hot (the motor) for you, take the 2 secs and put it back on, don't need any wrench for that, the rotation of the motor keeps it tight.

I didn't remove any shroud to take mine off, slipped right out. I did spray the nut first with some lube, and tapped the pipewrench with a hammer, came right off.

So far idling for as much as a 1/2 hour in one place, the needle didn't get to 50% of the gauge. My son was sleeping in his car seat and we didn't want to move him, so left the A/C on for that time idling only, with the truck hanging 1/2 way out of our garage with the garage door open. I really kept an eye on the gauge, never hit 50%, this was a pretty good test!

To address the original Q...
I did this to lock the pulley...

I measured the length from the bolt that sticks out from the engine block to one of the holes on the pulley..

Don't know the name of the bolt, but I took one of the "O" hook bolts found at ANY hardware store and bent the straight end at a 90 degree angle, so it went from this:

O---- to this: O--'

Then I slid the "O" end over the bolt sticking out of the engine --and-- the bent angle slipped into the hole in the pulley. ... this locked the pulley in place and allowed me spin the bolt off...

Oh my god NO!!! Do NOT take it off if you only drive your truck 10 miles every weekend. That means that you'll be driving 5200 miles a year with NO CLUTCH FAN!!! Holy Crap! Do NOT! Do NOT! Do NOT!!!

Well, actually, you'll probably be okay, but look at your temp guage every once & again while your idling at the Sonic parking lot.

The water pump pulley is pressed onto the shaft at the factory, so it;'s pretty much the pulley with a big 3/4" threaded bolt sticking out. That and about 10" of room between the motor and the electric fan that's mounted to the radiator.

Now that I got the fan off the water pump with all your help. What is the install procedure as far as torque and does some of the removal tricks damage the new water pump during install?

I have done this a few times. Its a pain in the butt. I think I jammed a screw in there to stop one side from turning while I cranked on the nut. I took a picture of the setup the last time I did it but I cannot find the picture.
