What is the best aftermarket exhaust available for the 4.7L in terms of power gain? I had my heart set on dual rear exit, but I hear there is actually a power loss.

You're not going to get much out of aftermarket exhaust except sound with the 4.7 until you free up the intake side as well. What else do you have done?

I bought the dual side exit Gibson Catback.
I also bought the Airaid Quick-fit Intake.
I read that the single exit exhaust is a little better for power. As far as sound goes I bought the Gibson because it is the quietest performance exhaust there is. It is very quiet below 2000rpms
but after that is sounds pretty mean and deep.

I was going to ask the same question,

I have a home brew with a k&n cone filter
I want something loud but doesn't sound like sh!t.
I like the looks of duals exciting out the back, just as long as the tips are separated closer to the edge of the bumper, Although turndowns after the muffler would be an option too.

What are your opinions

How much is that Airaide Intake? Where can I find one? I want to make that mod but don't care for the look of the "home-brew".
Also thinking fo putting the cat back exhaust on. Is there any welding involved, or can I install it myself (I don't have a welder).

The MBRP dual rear split is the only one that makes power in my opinion because it uses a 2 1/4 inch rear tail pipes, and becasue of this it keeps the exhaust pressure and also alows the spare tire to still fit in the stock location

Well I don't know about MBRP but a Gibson cat back system with dauls will get about 18 hp. Single out will make more power than a daul out, but as far as true dauls I don't know.

I have the Gibson cat-back dual rear exit, sometimes I think that it is not quite loud enough, but every body says that when I am driving down the road it sounds great. I also have a homebrew coldair intake, poweraid spacer, port and polished TB, and I removed the rubber/plastic flap next to the radiator. I could definitely feel the difference.

I've been researching this too, after reading many posts it appears that gibson and mbrp are the way to go on the 4.7's...Jonas you think you can post your mbrp dyno #'s? Can anyone else post some gibson dyno #s? Although sound is an issue, I'm simply going for the most power gain.

Better power= yes
Sound= Holy crap this sounds tough!!(Its loud though.)

This is a shot in the dark, but what about (on a 2002) removing the muffler, leaving the third cat and running dual pipes out the rear?

what's your comments on power and sound?

I'm getting ready to put an exhaust on but can't decide where I wanna go. I need more performance at higher speeds, (40-80mph) I do have an intake mod so that should help. I want either duals out the rear or turn-downs, (no offense) I really don't like the look of side exit exhaust.

I'm running a home brew intake with a K/N filter and Magnaflow muffler with single exit behind the rear tire. I'm very pleased with the power increase!! However; as mentioned, the real increase wasn't noticable until the intake and exhaust combination.

I'm running a single Flowmaster w/ a turndown right in front of my rear axle. Sounds great. I just don't have any intake mods yet.

I was just about to do a home brew intake, but a friend of mine said that was a bad idea. (if done out of PVC) Because the pvc fibers will get sucked into your intake. ? ! I know a lot of people have done this, but has anyone heard the story my friend is telling me?

The only way you get the PVC stuff in there is if you don't clean up around the cuts. If you make a good clean cut and clean up after it you should be fine. there is also a cleaner you can use called purple primer to clean the crap off of the pipe it is not needed and only used for clean systems like drinking water but if it will make you feel better it is an option.

I am a plumber and I work with PVC every day of the week, well at least 5 days hehehe. As long as you debur after the cut there will be no other fibers. The primer is used to soften the pipe and fittings before glueing. It really creates a bond. You are right, primer is not needed for the air intake though. Some primer is purple so that the plumbing inspectors know you used primer!

Hey dakquad, The primer I put on mine (rust-o-lium) (sp?) do you think that'll help the pvc from warping or melting, at all?
that was not my intention, I sprayed it because the white just didn't cut it for me.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Now I can once more lean on the Homebrew way-to-go. I wasn't all into spending $300 for an intake system. Now I can get clear corners, taillights, and an intake system for less than $300!.... :-)

You guys talking about intakes I have a suggestion for you. What i did was remove the whole airbox system and place a filter directly to the throttle body and on the breather tube buy a small breather filter from pep boys for about $10. It will save you money and great on gas. Remember you dont have any sensors from the filter box to the throttle body on the 4.7. Just make sure you get a decent size filter. You will really feel the difference and HEAR the difference in the amount of air you are getting.

The reason to use an after market or home brew "Cold air intake" air intake system is to draw cold air into the intake. That's why they call them "Cold air intakes". By placing the K n N filter right on the TB you will be pulling in POWER ROBBING warm air from off of the hot motor. The true cold air intakes even use a seperation wall to deflect the warm air from the side of the motor from going into the filter when the "Cold air intake" is placed so the filter is where the original air box use to be.

I just had a " v-force" muffler dual split rear exit with some really nice oval rolled edge tips ($78 cdn. each). it sounds wayyyyy better than the glasspack i had on there before coming out in front of the back tire, definite noticeable power gain too.

True equal length mandrel bent duals (2.25") with 3rd cat removed.

K&N Drop in filter in the stock airbox.

3923 Autolite Plugs.

These relatively inexpensive mods cost me under $400 total. The exhaust itself was $312 (have Dynomax racing mufflers on it). Dyno numbers with these mods ended up being 207.5 RWHP and 268.6 RWTQ. I'd say that true duals do work when done correctly. Five pulls on the dyno don't lie. No power loss, and no torque loss. Now I need to get back and see what the HO Cams/HO Intake and 70mm TB have added to that above total. Should be another quality gain in performance.

why does every one say gibson is quiet... i mean granted its no flowmaster...but its loud with windows down and i set off a car alarm once and i get them to reset(i think thats what its called) all the time. it was funny, i started my truck, and i hear faintly *beep beep* i was like hmmm so i reved the engine and it happened again. right before i left the parking spot i floored it and the alarm went off...lol...i think the owner was out there to cause it got shut real fast. anyway everyone says they can hear me coming so i dont know what u guys consider quiet. personally i think stock R/Ts sound awsome. to bad i can get that sound. if the gibson rusts out then i think im gonna go for split rear cause it looks so damn cool. hopefully i can get it quieter too(doubt it) maybe ill get a quiet muffler out to two cool looking tips. i wonder how much true duals would cost.

I had 2 chambered flowmasters put on my baby 3 months ago. They were noisy inside the cab and out. I lost low-end torque which really pissed my off. Obviously, I bought a cat-back to gain a little bit more power, not lose it. I knew the new exhaust would be louder than stock, what I didn't know is that the sound would resonated back into the cab. This was an another real irritant since I just bought 6 expensive focal speakers to replace the stock paper so called "preminum speakers".

Today I had the flowmasters taken off. I follow the advise of many past posts and had the Gibson 3" single out exhaust installed. (I put the flowmasters on before I discovered this site).

Good recommendation, Good Idea.

I notice that my low-end torque returned plus a little extra. The muffler has a mellow "growl" around 2000 rpm and there's little or no noise in the cab. This observation was noted with just a K$N drop-in air filter as an intake modification.

I guess noise is relative. After you've had worthless flowmasters on, anything sounds good. Ricer exhaust would be preferable.
