The Air Raid kit does not have a heat shield and does not replace the air hat. If you want the best go K&N. If you have a V8 and some other mods (TB, headers, cat back) you might want to add an S&B 9' filter on the end of the K&N tube ,but it is not necessary.

So where do you put that 9' filter. I'm sure there is not enough room under the hood, and I only have a 6' bed. Is there some sort of roof/tailgate mount for it. :)

I have a '02 4x4 AWD 4.7 with a homebrew cold air intake. Cost me about $75 to build and I am very pleased with the results. Painted it an orange enamel and it looks pretty good. Only takes about 2 hours to do it yourself.

MattM,

I just browsed thru the website about the home-brewed Air Intake system.

Are you happy with this configuration? How much performance increase did you notice?

I am interested in this process on my 2002 QC 4x4 with 4.7L. It only have 4000 miles on the odometer.

I am pleased with the configuration of this setup. I did take a little extra time to sand down the "Made in USA" and other little bumps that were on the ABS Plastic Pieces. As far as power goes I am not sure how much I have gained but there is a noticeable difference. The guy on the website said they gained about 2mpg on the highway, but I can't keep my foot out of the throttle, it definitely sounds like it has a 4bbl on it now. Normal driving conditions you can't tell that it is on as far as noise. I am in the process of making a heat shield for it but am also looking at a body lift and don't want to refabricate another one if I go with the lift. I can take some pictures of mine and e-mail them to you if you like. Let me know

MattM,

I'm going to start pricing the stuff to manufacture the intake here soon. I'm looking for inexpensive ways to increase the power...

If you happen to have any pics, that would be great... Thanks..

I have a 318 5spd. 3.9 diff RC..... I love my FIPK... it really helped my gas mileage as well as my throttle response.... I think though the best thing about it is that mine sounds like a turbo charger.... it has a really high pitch whislte when you are getting on it and then when you let off it makes a destinct blow-off valve sound that intimidates most people.... People say that there is a leak in the setup but it's imposible because of the sealant that I used when I installed it.... go with the FIPK... that is if they make it for your truck!!!!!

I've got an AirAid and have no complaints. Makes an interesting sound when I goose it-gives me an idea how much the throttle is open.
Difference??? Doesn't matter if it is home made, K&N, Z-Tube or AirAid. All any of them does is reduce the drag on the incomming air charge, so I can't see anything other than bragging rights,...D

The only thing, other than braggin' rights that any of these modifications should be giving is a better breathing engine.

The less restrictions that are in the path of the air and fuel, the more efficient the engine can operate.

I am looking for slight increases in mpg and around town performance. The Cold Air Intake is a first step in achieving these items. I also am looking for a more open Cat-Back exhaust to help remove all the extras that we are forcing in..

I'm not expecting 10mpg increase, or 100hp over stock, but I would be happy with +1-2mpg and maybe a little more "seat of the pants" HP...

This list is great.. I'm learning alot and hope to make these modifications soon..

Thanks..

Open your exhaust to 3" and use a good low backpressure muffler. There are gobs of them on the market, and I don't have any suggestions for a brand or model-I'm sure others can give "sound" evaulations,...D

Byron,
Another idea-consider the addition of a toneau cover. There has been an engineering study done by some students in a college in the NE concerning aerodynamics that you might find interesting. The address is: http://mars.acnet.wnec.edu
If you look under Haffner's 'Did You Know?', you might find interestings on bed coverings. Interpolation would indicate approximately 1MPG improvement with a toneau-guys I've spoken with have said they've seen 2 around town (??).
This is going to be my next purchase, but I've got another month or two of saving before I make the investment. [I'm looking at a couple of hard lids, but haven't made the final decission yet. As I plan on keeping my rig 15 years or more, that precludes a soft cover].
I also saw a post about staying out of O/D in the city that I've tried and seems to improve MPG slightly.
Good luck, and keep all of us advised on useful tricks!,...D

Doc,

I bought my Dak on February 26th, 2002... I ordered the Gull-Wing Tonneau also. I love it! I'm not a big hauler of large stuff, but I do carry alot of luggage and camera gear, lighting and backdrops.

The Tonneau has served me wonderfully! It really makes the truck look different..

I haven't driven it much without the tonneau on it, so I can't state that it provides any kind of mpg increase, but it sure looks good. I highly recommend this cover if you need to have secure storage space...

I've looked at the Gull Wing and after speaking with a distributor, decided against it. The drawback for me is the lack of ability to hinge, from the front of the bed, to haul either longer items or larger goodies at the back. Yes,though, it does look trick! I've often thought a gull with front 'hingability' would be the best of both worlds, but I haven't been able to locate one,...D

K&N makes FIPK for 1999 5.2L & 5.9L, 2000 & 2002 5.9L. They only make filters for other engine sizes. Quick D, Intense & 360 are good alternatives. Personally don't care for Airaid.

now for the k&n does it replace the factory air hat? it looks like it would attach right to the top of the throttle body? i was thinking about an intake from 360airintakez.com.

what effect does the factory air hat produce? it looks like it would create turbulance above the tb, whereas the k&n would eliminate this

am i close?

It replaces the air hat and connects directly to the TB....

It was an easy install and I am very pleased with the sound and throttle response.
