Does anyone know if advancing or retarding the timing will eliminate, or help a pinging problem? I have a 2000 with a 5.9L, and it is pinging pretty bad. I am getting ready to advance the timing, but was wondering if this is going to affect the pinging problem, either positively or negatively. Thanks.

advancing it will only make it worse. take the truck in to get it flashed which retards the timing a bit.

don't know about that but i had some pinging when the engine was onder stress. then i swiched to 93 octane and the pinging, or i guess preignition, went away temporally. once i installed 8 fms injectors my problem was solved. this also got rid of some minor hesitation.

When you can manually adjust the timing, retarding will reduce the pinging.
