I have a 2000 Quad Cab, 4.7L, 4 wheel ABS, 4x4, 3.92, rear LSD, auto, heavy duty cooling, tow package, blah, blah, blah. I periodically tow a 3800 pound boat and trailer (with surge brakes), and am thinking of flat-towing a 4700 pound military truck (with some sort of brakes rigged). What have board readers found to be a worthwhile brake upgrade for towing? Is there a good rotor, caliper, pad combination that works with the ABS? I have 15 inch rims and no plans to go larger so whatever it is must fit in them.

Peter, I'm thinking same [except for specific load] for my '00QC. I've heard of PowerSlots [?] but will wait for someone to post REAL info,...D

I don't tow, but I think the upgrade I just applied to my Club Cab will work well for you. I replaced the factory rotors with Rototech drilled and slotted rotors and the pads with Stillen metal matrix pads.

I am extremely pleased with the braking ability now. As a matter of fact, I really had to step on them this morning and they brought the truck to a quick and smooth stop, far better than the stock parts.

Contact Michael at mneuhaus@tampabay.rr.com

He can get these parts for you for a total of $210, which includes the shipping charges.

Best wishes,

David

Thanks for the input! Are drilled and slotted rotors appropriate for the higher, sustained heat temperatures that occur when towing? I just want to make sure whatever I end up with will not warp easily (like the factory rotors do).

I would go with just slotted rotors and skip the cross drilled option. Only Porsche makes the rotors properly by casting the holes in the rotors. Everyone else simply drills the rotors after they have been cast and this creates micro-fractures in the metal. If you excessively use your brakes in hard driving these cracks will propagate and lead to other problems, such as warping. I would simply go with the metal pads and slotted rotors. I have ridden in a car with slotted rotors all the way around, 10" discs and it braked almost as well as my car with 12" discs up front. Identical cars. That's what I would do.
