No, this is not another one of the 12000 posts of "Where can I get an intake for my 2.5?"

I made a custom intake for my 95 2.5L Sport. I used the pointers that eddie_orlando gave me and went down to autozone and home depot for the parts. End result, slightly better throttle response and there seems to be some real world horsepower gains. Oh yeah, and the really cool sucking sound when the gas is mashed. Yep, like a potato.

Dave,
Just wondering, what parts did you have to get at Autozone (besides the K&N)? I'm glad to hear you finally got up the courage to cut up your factory intake, kind of a ballsy thing to do when you don't have a backup, luckilly when I did it I was at KRC and turned it over to Marty who I knew would make it work. It is a pretty cool sucking noise, could you believe how restrictive the factory intake was, pretty amazingly inefficient.

The way I did it was I cut the intake where the accordian stuff ends. Then I used a 3" to 3" pvc coupling. The coupling went over the plastic part of the intake to make a good seal. In the other side of the coupling I put one side of a 3" to 3" exhaust tubing coupler. On the other end of the 3" pipe I stuck on the air filter. Then I used a vacuum cap to cap the vacuum hose that went to the heated intake valve in the bottom of the stock airbox. I will post photos when I get them developed.

Thanks Eddie for for telling me how to do it. Without ya my motor would still be sucking in heated air through a straw.

Dave,

that sounds like my setup, I cut off the intake where the accordian stuff ends and directly put on the K&N, I forgot the part number, but the opening almost perfectly fit over the factory intake, the filter is made to be a direct replacement for a full size Chevy/GMC w/ a V8. I didn't use all the tubing you did (exhaust pipe, pvc, etc.), mines a little more simple.

Now you've made it this far try this. as far as the PCV, intake valve, etc. discard the fabric type flexible tube that was ribbed and went down to the bottom of the engine, not needed. now for the hard piece of tubing that went from the back of the valve cover and to the factory airbox. Unbolt it, it is only held on by a bolt directly behind the throttle body. Keep the factory PCV valve that goes from the front of the valve cover to the bottom of the TB (it is sucking the spent gases from the crankcase, now the back opening of the valve cover (doing the intake of fresh air into the crankcase, either leave it open, or get a K&N crankcase vent filter, just measure the opening and get the part number from the catalog at the local Autozone, etc. It is a mini filter with a chrome top and rubber bottom that slides over the flange on the valve cover and can be tightend with the same metal collar found on full size K&N's. that is my setup, really cleaned up the engine compartment, and shows how much space is really under our hoods!!

Eddie, mine is nnot as complicated as it sounds. I basicly just have an extension between my accordian and filter. As for my crankcase filter, I disconnected the flexible part that hooked into the airbox and put a filter on the hardline that is there. You'll understand it when the pics get posted.

Dave,
I get it now, what I did was remove the hardline and put the K&N crankcase vent filter directly on the valve cover on the back opening by the firewall, keeping the factory PCV valve that goes into the TB, cleans it up a bit by removing the hardline that went into the factory airbox.

Yeah I know what you meant too. hehehe I just haven't done it yet. : )

eddie, with what you've done to your truck what is now your top speed? I've had mine to 105 and I raced a dodge ram diesel 4X4 on the freeway a few hours ago. I pretty much had him to about 95 or so then he hauled balls past me as I hobbled to 100. He had to be going at least 120. I was thinking of setting up some type of ram-air, I believe it would have quite an effect over 90 mph.

What gave you the most power, the cam?

Dave,
It's kind of hard to say what gave me the most HP on it's own since I basically did all my mods on two seperate occasions. Here's my timeline:
- K&N drop in right after I bought it new
- catback Flowmaster setup w/ cheap prefab pipes
- about six months later I went to a real deal no cat setup retaining my muffler but now using mandrel bent tubing, larger diameter also
- K&N custom intake w/ large cylinder K&N, porting and polishing of factory throttle body (KRC), Mopar Performance cam, Bosch +4 plugs, Bosch plug wires, advanced timing from 12 to 16 degrees, Borg Warner brass cap and rotor, Robert Shaw 180 thermostat, K&N crankcase vent filter, new belts and timing belt

Wow that's a lot of mods for a 4 banger, hehe I got a few mods myself. Anyway, what gave me the most horsepower was putting on the Airaid Intake System and Powertone Sportstone Muffler big difference after doing both. I also got a Malory Hyfire VI-A Ignition CD Box, Accels 8.8MM Performance Wires, MSD Blaster2 Coil, 97 Jeep 4.0 Throttle Body, 180 degree thermostat, and Jet Chip Stage 2. Right now I using Autolite 985 sparkplugs, I use to have Splitfire SF98E which one of the plugs cracked on me just a little more than one year. I'd like to know if Bosch +4 plugs will work with the ignition system I have? Are they resister type plugs? According to the manual of my Malory HyFire VI-A Ignition system I can not use resistor type plugs. FYI upgrading my ignition system didn't give me horsepower it just made my truck run smoother, and gave me better throttle responce. I tried to copy 2pnt4luv now know as 5pnt9ltrluv intake system but had a little trouble figuring out what to do with the crankcase vent hose going into intake system. Thanks to both of you I think I'll use a K$N crankcase vent filter to make it work.

Again thanks for the info.

Herman
