Message:
I have a 93' dakota with 5.2 and almost 120,000 on it. I am thinking about putting a cam in it to give me a bit more power between 700-4,000rpm. I want something for the street and maybe drag strip but also will take it offroad once in awhile. I know a cam will be cheaper that 1.7 rr's. What else do I need to replace aside from the cam alone? anyone know of any part#'s?

If you are on a tight budget, go for aluminum 1.7 rockers... as cheap, or cheaper than a cam. If you plan on keeping your truck forever, go for a set of Crower 1.7s (~$425 I'll ship for free this month!) Can be installed within 3-5 hours, you'll need mopar valve covers or knock baffles out in your stock covers to clear the 1.7s... If you do a cam, there's a wide variety-- plus there's a lot more work involved to install (remove radiator, etc. etc.) With ANY truck in the 100k+ range, it's a good idea to replace the timing chain *(double roller). Most cams out there are designed for higher rpms than you listed-- might not be the thing you want. You can always have a custom grind done (I did, and will have it up soon).

For the average, daily driver (and/or weekend racer), the aluminum rockers are more than plenty. If you want the absolute best out there for the Magnum engines: Crower.

On an engine with 100K+ miles, I wouldn't recommend that you change the cam as the lifters would need to be replaced (regardless of the fact that they are rollers...they wear out as well) and the cam bearings would also be questionable. Change out the distributor drive bushing in the block as well as it's prone to wearing out as well.

Bernd, do I have to change out all that stuff if I just do the rockers?

Andrew: No...you won't have to change out all that stuff as you're not tearing into the internals of the engine. With the 1.7:1 rockers, you will need to either dimple the factory oil baffles under the valve covers...or...invest in a set of Mopar valve covers (look much nicer anyway) for clearance with the 1.7's.

Mopar Performance 1.7:1 Kit (Pushrods, guideplates, adjusters, lock-nuts, rockers): $400 shipped.

Crower 1.7:1 Kit: $600-$700 depending on vendor.

On the Summit racing parts: "For Dodge applications, you must use CRN-11746-16 or CRN-11759-16 aluminum rocker arms and CRN-36668-16 and CRN-36621-16 (heat-treated) 5/16 in. diameter pushrods." - Total price for the Summit "Kit" = $455.

Is is a bad idea to install the 1.7s and then latter on add a cam?

I'm not sure if I will add a cam so I am leaning towards the 1.7s. However, if latter on I do want to go with a cam are there cams that are compatible with the 1.7s?

Bill,

I found this info on a website stick with 1.6 roller rockers, for reduced friction, throttle response and rev potential if you plan on adding a cam.

Trying to boost torque? Run with the stock cams and the 1.7 roller rockers. This does 3 things to boost power; reduces friction, adds higher lift, allowing more air into the cylinder and adds more duration (usually 2 to 4 degrees) due to the geometry, making the engine see a bigger cam than what is really in there.

With 1.6 ratios expect better lower throttle response and up to 6 rear wheel horsepower. 1.7 ratios can add up to 15 rear wheel horsepower to a stock Magnum.

Did anyone see the rockers I was talking about? They are not rolloer rockers . they are just stamped rocker arms. If you do a search on summit and punch in rocker arms+318 then they will pop up. But they sure dont say what ratio they are.

Your biggest bang for the buck will be to change out the computer to the performance computer. It's an easy job but remember to change your thermostat.

What's your gearing ? It's the hottest cams that will have the roughest idle - do you have the deep gearing required to work well with that kind of cam ?

Not to sound like an idiot, but Ive never heard the term deep gearing. Does that mean numerically lower or higher? Ive ask some of the guys I work with and they gave me mixed answers lol.

Numerically higher. Rough cams tend to run higher rpms for best power, with small balls down low, thus, deeper gearing is needed, or you'll wallow like a garbage truck while a milder-engined vehicle walks off and leaves you.

You'll also want to go to a higher stall-speed torque converter if you've got an auto. That will allow you to get your engine rpm's into the power band off the line.

You can go with the 1.7 rockers now and can still use them with a newer cam later. Any good cam company will ba able to grind your new cam to fit the 1.7 rockers. I did that with my old 1.7 rockers and a new cam from KRC when I upgraded to a 408. Also do a search on here because I remember someone found that the stock stamped steel rockers for the Viper V-10 were 1.7's and bought those cheap and they fit under the stock covers. Some guys also just flatten or remove the oil baffles inside the stock covers to fit the roller rockers. Some of these kits require a pedestal to stud conversion kit ($75) from crane cams to run on these engines. I am running the Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rockers.
