In the next couple of weeks I am planningon installing hte Gibson Swept side cat-back exhaust on my 2001 4x4 Quad cab.

I know that it is suposed to be a bolt-on system ... just wondering if there are any "surprizes" that I should know about ? Any "difficulties" ?

I ask because I plan to do it on a day when I need to be able to use the truck in the evening ... don't want to be draggin' exhaust parts just because I couldn't finish. :>

When I went to take the factory system apart I had trouble. The clamps were very tight and crimped the pipe. Even with the clamps off I could not pull them apart. I ended up cutting the factory system in front of and behind the muffler. The Gibson went on without any trouble. Since the clearances are smaller for my lowered truck, I did go to a shop and have the system tack welded together so I would not have any slippage.

Make sure you get a sawsall, it's a real pain to cut that stuff w/ a hacksaw!(been there, did that!)I did mine all by myself(split-rear)out on the street in front of my house. So it's not that hard.Just give yourself alot of time to do it(4 HRS. Max).

I agree with Mark DQC. I installed the Gibson single swept side catback as well. It was a real pain to get the factory exhaust off. Even after owning the truck for a month. I just used WD-40 to ge the hangers out of the rubber mounts. I had to cut up the pipes since they seemed to have been crimped after installation. Once the stock exhaust is off, the Gibson install was a breeze! I didn't like the sound at first, but it grew on me. I just love hearing that low rumble. Under acceleration I think it kind of sounds like a ricer though... that's what I get for having a 3.9

It shouldn't rattle when you get on it. Mine developed a rattle at the joint between the factory pipe and the Gibson pipe. A little muffler tape and an exhaust clamp on the joint killed the rattle.

it might be that its not clamped well enough in the spot u mentioned.
ill adjust tonight
i think the rattle might just be because the hangers are loose or something. oh well i'll get it right one of these days. it only rattles at like 3500+ rpms though.
it sounds really cool in tunnels

and i don't hear the ricer resembelence at all
speeking of ricers...i drove a stock 2002 civic lx 4dr auto and it seems to have better pickup then my pickup...although i doubt it could beat me in a race to 80 or 90, but to 60 it would be close. doesn't have the same high speed stability. 60 in the civic feels like 80 in the dak...quieter though...lol

i kind of like how ricers sound. every one ive talked to says my exhaust sounds like a mustang

Yeah, the stock system was hard to separate. I cut the back end of the muffler as per instructions. The front end is the tough part. I recommend that you cut along the muffler pipe with a dremel. This way you can enlarge the crimped area and pull off the muffler. I made the mistake of cutting both the muffler and cat pipe just before the crimp. I just had enough cat pipe to connect the gibson system on. Its been about 8 months now and she hasn't fallen off yet. The install was a breeze. Good luck

I paid $50 bucks and had it installed at a whole-in-the-wall muffler shop.... I think it was worth it.

Mine sounds pretty good. But I did loose the bottom end and noticed it right away even with the FIPK on. Guess, I need to do the TB, M1, and headers/y-pipe...etc...not till I get my lift though.

Well, I got my Gibson stainless swept-side installed today.

First step was to remove the stock exhaust clamps (one immediately before & one a little behind the muffler). I ended up breaking one end off of both the U-shaped exhaust bolts...hehe...good thing I didn't need to re-use them!! My buddy & I then spent about two hours in the parking lot cussing & damning because we could not seperate the muffler from the cat's header pipe. The problem was a good-sized dent/crimp from the factory torquing the hell out of the exhaust clamp. We tried loosening things up with a srewdriver & hammer, but only succeeded in breaking a carbide tipped screwdriver.

In the end, I admitted defeat, called Meineke, and shelled out a couple bucks to have them install the system.

When they pulled my Quad outta the bay, my buddy & I just looked at each other. The sound was COMPLETELY new & different from the stock. After settling the tab, we went out for a little joy ride. All I can say at this point is OMG!!! This thing REALLY acts like it has a 360 in it now!!

I've had a Fastman TB for about a year, and I noticed a difference. But now that I have the cat-back, I think I'm really utilizing that TB...and definitely the exhaust.

As for sound: Outside the cab, there's a nice V8 rumble at idle. Nothing too obnoxious. Just enough to let you know that a V8 resides here. Quick taps on the accelerator reveal that deep, throaty roar & the nice cackle as RPMs drop.

On the road, with the windows down, there is a definite difference...especially when another vehicle or a structure is on your passenger side. On WOT, there is moderate noise intrusion in the cab, but not enough to make it difficult to speak with a passenger.

And the best part, is that this exhaust system has little to noise intrusion in the cab when held at a semi-constant speed. I tried 5 MPH increments from 45-70...using cruise control for consistency....and the exhaust noise barely registers in the cab.

Guess the best thing I can say is that the butt-dyno really LIKEY!!! It LIKEY a LOT!!! I'm completely & utterly surprised by the difference in acceleration both from a stop & a rolling WOT.
