You should change the computer. A '93 Ram PCM will work just fine...it's a simple 5 minute swap. The 318 PCM will run the engine, but it won't perform up to it's optimum.

Now would be an excellent time to upgrade to a Mopar 5.9 PCM, and gain some extra power.

Dakman,
Did you fall and bump your head or something? I'm just asking because the information your putting out is all scrambled. Maybe you should lay off the Qualudes or something. There's no such thing as a 94 GenIII. There's no such thing as a 97 Durango. There's no such thing as a 97, 5.9L Dakota.

Oh, I see. You were just joking. Right? God, I hope nobody actually takes advice from you!

ok, the info on here is all scrambled, I have an 87 Dakota with the 3.9 and I'm tossing a 318 in it. I want to know if the oil pan, mounts, and exh. manifolds from the later dakotas that came with the 318 will work.

i dropped a 98 318 in my 90 dak 4x4, the only problems i had were wiring through firewall bulk head connector (i used a 91 engine harness) 14 wires were out of place. the electric pusher fan needs to be used (dont skimp on cooling), the mounts, tranny, torque, oil pan (my engine came outa a van and the oil pan cleared everything)
oh and a newer fuel pump with no return.

it is a LOT simpler if you stay with a non magnum, wiring and fuel wise.

It's easier if you want to maintain the same emissions, etc. setup, and you still have the mounts to deal with. I put a 2001 360 Magnum into my '89 Shelby. Add a Mopar Performance ignition system, splice a couple wires, put carb and 4V intake, use the Magnum exhaust or headers. Also, the Magnum will use the V6 engine mounts. Using the pre-Magnum V8 block will require an added crossmember for the mounts.
So, yes, the later V8 stuff, as listed, will work.

The 318 I'm putting in is out of a 70 Dodge d-100. So it's none emission and I don't have any wiring to worry about. I just wanted to know if the mounts from the newer 318's will fit on the old ones to adapt it into the frame.

The 318 Magnum mounts will not work on the pre-Magnum blocks.

318 c.i. swapped for 3.9 liter
IP: Logged

I have a 1987 Dodge Dakota 4x4 that has the 3.9 liter v-6 in it. The motor went south and I am considering putting a 318 in it. I am wondering if anyone out there has done it? What is involved? I imagine I would have to use the tranny and transfer case from a vehicle that has the 318 in it. A friend told me it would be more work than the truck is worth, but I like my little dodge. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

easiest way to do it is grab up a 92-95, maybe 96 Dakota and swap it all out
i got around the bulkhead BS by just swapping the dash as well

1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

Seems like I remember reading that there was a structural issue regarding 4WD V8 conversions on the Gen1. Not sure just where the issue was, but seems like it was a space limitation issue that was not present with the 2WD model. Anyone?

I just recently purchased a 95' 360 for my 94 2wd dakota. I have everything I need except the wiring harness which i cant seem to locate anywhere. The computer came out of a 99 ram, will it work? Someone in a previous post said you can just splice into your v6 harness. If so, how would it connect to my new computer, and what wires would I need to splice? Any help is appreciated.

Any Magnum V8 engine harness 1992-1995 (OBDI) will work, it isn't Dakota specific, or specific to 318 or 360. That may help your search. The OBDI harness will not plug into the 1996 and newer OBDII computer. Yeah, you can splice the wires, but the OBDII computer is a lot more involved in the overall operation of the vehicle and may or may not cause issues and headaches you don't need. For overall ease, keep looking for an OBDI computer for 360 1993-1995 (there was no 360 Magnum in 1992, but the '92 318 harness will work). Worse comes to worse, you can buy a reman. at any parts house or a performance model from Mopar.

hey dak_freak, i happen to have the complete wiring harness from a '94 360 magnum, and the computer as well. would you be interested in buying it? i also have the intake, fuel rails, and injectors if you (or anyone) is interested. The truck was a 3/4 ton auto trans 4x4. I am not exactly sure if my computer and wiring harness are EXACTLY compatible with your application, so you may want to find out first...unless somebody on here knows...

UPDATE:

The engine is finally installed, took four days doin it after work. I had to get the computer out of a 95 ram shipped from out of state. Also had to pick-up an oil pan for a dakota R/T at the parts store. The water pump did not fit with the fan installed, so i had to buy an electric fan. Very little clearence!

I have a 98 (OBDII) Dakota. Had a 3.9 Mag motor in it. I blew up that motor. I have a 318 sitting and ready to go in, however does cyl 1&8 and Cyl 2&7 fire at the same time. I want to splice into the existing 6 cyl harness.
