Anyone using the ATI procharger kit on a Dakota R/T? I was on the ATI site and it seems they don't think much of Vortech. I heard that the Vortech kit is the preferred setup. It is the kit I will probably purchase. Need some opinions about intercooling cause according to ATI you are basicly building a bomb without it and the ignition retard that other companies use in their kits kills you power gains!

They're system works well but the intercooler sucks. Our '98 R/T knocked it off twice (Hotchkis 2/3 drop on the truck). So far, she's running 8# reliably without any detonation. It's a pain in the a$$ to install without some extra work though.

Go to the speedtweaks website and then click on the project trucks link. We've got the install on the "Project ATI R/T" link.

Why are they mocking Vortech? Aren't Vortech kits among the best out there?

i think alot of people are going towards powerdyne and ati because of the factor that they dont have to drill and tap the oil pan....as least the few peeps that i talked to.

I work at TurboConnection Racing in Edwardsville IL. We install about 2-3 Procharger kits a month and about 1 Vortech kit a month. We mainly build LT1 and LS1 Camaros and '87-up Mustangs. ATI is has been using intercoolers in there kits since the started. Vortech started saying intercoolers didn't make a difference and when ATI challenged them to a dyno shootout on the exact same car they back down because they did some research and found out intercoolers do work! Then all of sudden Vortech had the AFTERCOOLER. Same f***ing thing as a intercooler only with a new name. If you look at where they put the aftercooler at, it was more like a AFTER THOUGHT. ATI kits can run more boost safely on the same octance as the Vortech kits. If you want proof, email me and I'll give you all the dyno sheets to prove it. We have a chassis dyno at our shop and thousands of runs stored on the computer.

There's no question that the intercoolers work (Air-Air or Liquid-Air)...price is going to be higher on the kit though depending on which intercooler type you plan on using.

The ATI kit does run well (Project ATI R/T - 1998 model) but we noticed no difference in performance with or without the intercooler (torn off due to location on the lowered truck).

If possible, a Liquid-Ait intercooler would be best in all conditions (much more efficient) but price hinders the average user from trying to install it (heat exchanger, pump, resevoir).

1BADDAK: Remember, the GM and Ford engines are Mass-Air...not Speed Density (at least stock system). Mass-Air is much more adaptable to boost than the Speed Density systems on our Magnum engines. I've also seen what an ATI system does to the power output of an SS Camaro (Holy Sh-t!). :)

there may not be a big difference when just adding the intercooler. However, the intercooler allows you to run more boost (also uses some) so that is where the gain is. Not simply putting it on and running the same boost.

Hey bernd. I guess you've installed the ATI kit on an R/T. So in your opinion which kit should I purchase for an R/T, ATI or Vortech SQ?

Vortech is much easier to install but no intercooler. ATI is a little harder (for the Dakota) but has an intercooler (and costs slightly more). Down side of the ATI kit IS the intercooler...if you plan on lowering the truck (2/3 drop), you will eventually rip it off the truck.

Both make some serious HP though.

where is the intercooler mounted... i just bought an intercooler from the junkyard.. 40 bucks. Hopefully I can pioneer (yea right) into the world of custom work... ooooh. anyways, any ideas on where and how to mount it.... I sat scratching my head for a while and the best I could come up with is to place it where the overflow bottle for the radiator is.. and relocate the battery and tray in the back under the cover over the bed. It isn't a very big intercooler.... its off an 86 t-bird turbo. Its in great shape though. almost perfect. and 40 bucks aint bad, even i i cant use it, Im sure I can sell it to some jap dude at my school for more who wants to put a turbo on his car.

The ATI intercooler is located under the engine bay at the k-member (suspension).

On the intercooler, make sure that it's rated for your application. It will either be too restrictive or too big if not matched properly and won't give you the boost required (if too restrictive, it may also prematurely wear out the supercharger - too much heat from too much back-pressure).
