Hi just wondering if they made a GEN II intake for a 2002 dakota 3.9? and also, would a GENII intake be better or would a VOLANT system be better? thanks!

you can modify the gen II for the v8's to work on a v6. IMHO the gen II is the better of the two

even if something did change, you could MAKE it work if you really wanted it.

well, i have never personally tried the volant, but a guy on dodgetrucks.org has one and he agrees the gen II is better.

i beleve the gen II has a larger area that attaches to the TB and flows more air.

its probably not enough of a differance to make you win a race, but if you are going to get a intake sysem, you might as well get the best.

danno (runs a 12.99) put his truck on a dyno, and the truck pulled the same numbers with the gen II as with no filter system at all.

there is no restrictions in the gen II. even IF the volant was as good it cant possibly be better

when they first came out they cracked at the base of the airhat. since then, they fixed the problem, so i'v been told. i have had mine for about 8 months, and have had no problems. if it DOES crack, K&N will replace it for free

It should work for you but to be sure I'd find a friend that has a 00/01 3.9 and pop the hoods and compare the placement of things. You want to check the cruise control unit and see if they are in the same position also your AC hoses if your truck has any of these. One of the changes between the 99 yr. and 00 yr. was the location of the cruise control unit, the K&N FIPK # 57-1517 has the parts to relocate it to a lower position in the fender well, K&N # 57-1509 doesn't have these parts. I have a series of photos on my install if you want them I can e-mail you.

Saddle Bracket: From what I've read this was added along with a design change to alleviate the cracking problem that K&N was having. The bracket will mount in the location the instructions give but I felt that it would rub the AC hose to much is the reason I changed it.

Use this link to K&N's site and you can download the instructions from their web site, just click on the star next to the 57-1517-1 part #

FIPK Information

As you can see K&N has added a (-1) to the part # that must mean they have made a revision to the product, I reviewed the instructions and they were the same as the one's that I have so I can't tell you what they could have changed.

Jason,

I have a Volant intake. I bought it before K&N came out with the 57-1517. Dan is right about the cruise control relocation. Volant system doesn't relocate the cruise unit. The K&N Gen II has a heat shield that separates the cool air from the hot engine compartment. The Volant has a heat shield around the filter. The Volant was a breeze to install where as the K&N would just be a little more complicated if you relocate the CC. Both have nice attributes. K&N did have a cracking problem but from the posts I read. They solved that problem and when they did crack K&N replaced it. (a slight inconvenience).

Noticible gains? I have to think back. I remember more noise than stock. I think the throttle response was a little better. I switched from a drop in K&N to the Volant. I think, all in all, with all the mods combined, I have gotten way better throttle response and the dyno butt says "yeah!!!" Needed to eliminate all the restrictive airflow from intake to exhaust. It's not like a '75 Trans Am, 400 Cu V8 but way better than stock. I can't see going wrong with either K&N GennII or Volant. Though recently, I did read a post regarding K&N cracking at the base at the TB.
