Hey! I have seen a lot of posts lately that mention people putting True Dual exhaust on their daks. But I have always heard that you can't put "True" Duals on a dakota due to the placement of the gas tank. And if it's debatable to me Dual exhaust is where there are two independant exhaust pipes coming from the manifolds/headers that are only connected by an H-pipe to equalize pressure.

In the research I have done I uncovered some pics somewhere of the routing. Hopefully whoever it is will speak up. There was a cat on either side of the transmission, then the pipe on the drivers side was bent to loop over the drive shaft to run along with the passengers side. I figure after the pipe made the hop over the axel one pipe was taken around the far side of the spair. It looked very possible to do, just a matter of finding a shop to do it or finding a bender and someone knowlegable.

Tue Duals does not mean that the exhaust has to run on either side of the truck or car. I have true duals and they run side by side.

Mine run side by side also...of course I have no 3rd cat either so that helps w/ room to put them like that.

I was always told that the pipes have to be of equal length or one side of the motor would have less back pressure than the other. Does the H-Pipe compensate for this??

Um...Who ever told you that did not know what they were talking about. The Y-pipe under my dak is definitely NOT the same length on either side. There is more pipe on the left (driver) side because the exhaust runs on the right (passenger) side and the pipe on the right side is considerably shorter.

What do you have a Y-pipe for?

True Duals ====
Y-pipe duals =>-<==
(Not True Duals)

This is rough but It's the best I can do.

It is true duals, I had the part where they joined at the cat cut off and the pipes welded in with the mufflers near the axle. Trust me, they are true.

So how many cats do you have? I'm not talking about the resonator or what ever else you guys call cats sometimes. How many Catalytic converters do you have?

2, I had 3, the y-pipe joined at the 3rd cat. One on each pipe. The cats are not resonators, they are pre-cats. The 02 sensors are on each one of the pre-cats, the 3rd cat did not have ANY sensors at all, so it went bye-bye.

I don't know a whole lot about previous Dakotas, but the pre-cats are installed just below the ehaust manifold on the y-pipe. The o2 sensors read from there. I take it you have an h-pipe on your truck? Are there any cats on it?

hehe, IntenseDak39 has a good sounding one, so Does BlackDak00. Flowmasters....gotta love 'em....

I think Intense is thinking about a dual sixer. He wants to turbocharge it, so the duals might help out with that....

They didn't put on the precats until 2001, all earlier Dakotas had just the 1 cat. I saw a GEN II with true duals in one of the mopar magazines back when it was new. They both ran up the passenger side and the oval mufflers were turned on their sides and stuffed sid by side between the driveshaft and the frame. The best way to make R/T into true duals is to use the Positive Performance headers off a 98 or 99 because that setup used to be dual back to the cat, where the cat had dual inlets and a single outlet. So you just lose the cat and start the duals form where the cat would have joined them. I'd put in some kind form cross over, probably one of those slick "x" pipes from magnaflow. I used to have a 93 V-8 Dakota that I used to just pull the whole exhaust off behind the cat for racing, it did make it sound pretty sweet, not too loud until you floored it, otherwise it just purred.

i just put a true dual system on my 98 dakota.i cut the ugly y pipe off and ran two pipes all the way back. its small two inch pipe with one small straight threw glass pack on each side, and thats it no cats. i had an 02 sensor right where the ypipe came togeht, but i disconneted it, and there was a o2 sensor in the cat but i pulled that .now i just need to relocate them, i have a black market book on where the hot spot is to place the 02 sensors. I went with the small 2 inch pipe to get it to crack, and then at the end i bought 22 in long stainless steel tips that are 4inches wide, to give it a little throaty sound. its a nice, loud, but nice sounding v8
