Subject: Going from 15" to 17" rims
IP: Logged

Message:
im looking to get myself some r/t rims for my dak. I have the crappy 15"ers (you know the ones that barely anyone has on their dak..the 5 point rounded ones) anyways im wondering how that will affect my speedo. Should i have to get another speedo cable, or have the pcm reset/modified? and is there any real performance advantage to the larger rims? (yeah okay im really buying them for the styling advantage)
Which do any of you like better and why? (if you've "upsized" your rims before...

Any info would be appreciated

If you go with the 255/50 tires I don't think there is much difference from the 15's (I have those too so I feel for you) and the 17's. www.krcperformance.net has a "Gear Box" to calibrate your speedo for gear or wheel/tire changes.

its not the rim size that matters, its the tire size. just get a tire with the same overall diameter and you will be fine

Kota hit that one right on the head. It isn't the size of the rims that matter, it is the size of the tires...the diameter/circumference.

The CAB (Controller Anti-lock Brakes) can be flashed to recognize the new revolutions per mile of your new tread. Unfortunately, a Dodge dealer will only flash your CAB for dealer-offered tire sizes.

In my case, I swapped out the stock 235/75/15's for a set of 31x10.50's. Fortunately, this was a tire size that was indeed offered from Dodge for the 2000's, and I was able to get my CAB flashed to correct my speedo & my ABS behaviour.

Hope that helps....

I've been thinking about the new 17x9" Chrome R/T style from Mopar about $253. from Koller Dodge Part # 82205902

The larger diameter wheel will not affect your Speedo, it would depend on the overall tire diameter if you found a tire that matches (or close to) your current tire diameter you would have no change at all in your Speedo.

The Goodyear Eagle LS I have on my truck now are P255/65R16 and 28" in diameter the same tire in P235/60R17 is 28.1" in diameter and a P235/70R15 is 27.9" in diameter.

I have a friend that has a 2001 Dodge Ram with the 4X4 Sport pkg. and I absolutely love those wheels. I was wondering if they could fit on my truck with the right tires. I have a 98 RC Dakota. I would buy the R/T rims but these are way less cause of a friend and they look just as cool. Let me know what yall think. Thanks for the tips and info on the subject.

when i put my R/T rims on, it really screwd my speedo up. It didnt even register any speed till i hit bout 15mph. I put 255/60 tires on em. Anyways for like 20$ the dealer programmed my pc for the rim/tire change and it fixed it with no prob....and as for your performance question, their gunna slow u down a bit due to the fact the R/T rims are quite a bit heavier that ur others were. But u get 100% better traction with the 9inch width!!(with the right tires of course)...anyway just my .02

I checked last night and the 255/50 17's that alot of people run on the RT rims are 27" diameter and the 235/70 15's that I am running are 28's so in my case it will lower my effective gear ratio. I was looking at the change in RPM's if I switch from 3.55's (suck) to 3.93 or 4.10's. Going with the 4.10's. Just a little over a 300 RPM difference at 70. Going from 2090 to 2400. (2500 with the 17's).

After I wore the hell out of my stock goodyear 225r15s I went to firestone and got 255r15 ss20 wheels. Considerably more grip but same rims and stock diameter.

The 255/65/16's should be about 29" tall according to goodyear. And the stock R/T tires are 255/55/17 and they are 28" tall according to goodyear. If you have 235/17/15's they should be 29" tall but if you have 215/75/15's they should be about the same as the R/T, 28" tall. Running with a 1" difference should hardly be noticible. I run a 1" taller snow tire all winter and my speedometer still works fine, but probably just a little off.

why not just keep the tire size the same or compatible and not worry about it

or

buy a stupid chips unit and it has a feature for reprogramming a new tire size into the pcm

going back to Yaaaabuddy03's ques, the 1994-2001 had a 6 lug pattern (correct me if im wrong), they didnt go to 5 lug until the 2002-up models. they arent the 4.5 by 6 pattern tho, so you would have to buy a lug adapter, hope he checks this thread again and sees this

miltonwaddums: It takes about 10 minutes for the dealership to flash the PCM. In my case, they hit me for 30 minutes labor, at the dealership's usual $75/hour. Your results may vary, I would say to expect a full hour's charge, but push to get that dropped down.
