Everytime that I check my oil at about 2,500, it looks like it's way over due for an oil change. I have 13,000 miles on my truck and going on my fith oil change. I have tried from regular to synthetic oils with no change. I know that 3,000 miles is the normal shedule for an oil change, but I have always gone alot longer with my other vehicles with similar driving. Is this normal?

All I know is that when the oil gets "darker" it's doing its job. Maybe our trucks run dirty..?
I have no answer for you.

There is a big difference between dirty oil and dark oil. If you think your oil is breaking down and not doing its job have it tested. There are places that will test your oil to see what's in it and what kind of condition it is in. I think Jiffy Lube even offers this service now. The report will tell you what metals are in the oil, any other fluid contamination, etc.. I test the oil on my 351w after long high rpm runs - one test showed excessive bearing material and I was able to pull the motor apart and fix it before the bottom end grenaded.

I agree with Jeff! Have it tested if in doubt! The apperence of oil has very little to do with it's performance. Some oils start off very light in color and others start out very dark. It would not take much to make the darker oil appear realy dark while the lighter colored oil would look better longer. I almost suspect that your filter is not doing it's job. Make sure that it is not in bypass and make sure it is a high quality filter!

My oil looks just as good at 5000 miles as it does at 1500 miles. I run Mobile 1 10w30 and Mobile 1 filter.

Sandman,
My last oil change was with Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic and the filter. How can I check to see if it's in bypass?

Well the easiest(sp) way is to reach up and feel the oil filter once the enige is up to temp. It should be realy hot. If the filter is cool to the touch it could be in bypass.
