Subject: What all mods are required to run boost?

Message:
Hey guys,

Exactly what mods are required to sucessfully run boost on our 4.7 engines? What parts come with the aftermarket kits (paxton, KB, etc.)? I have an opportunity to start fabricating on a setup to use a Buick 3800 Supercharger unit, which by my calculations, should put out about 23% less boost on a 4.7 than a 3.8. I believe the factory boost of these units is around 8psi, so I would be looking at about a 6psi unit I guess, and the ability to get a smaller pulley to make more boost later. Truthfully though, this supercharger is a little small, but do you all think this would really matter for a truck that I would just want to run mid to high 13's with and have lots of torque( I know that boost =torque and cfm Volume =HP)? I know bigger is better, and I would really like to get a new Lightning supercharger, but I am afraid that they are made of unobtainium for me and my measley budget.

I know a couple of really awesome fabricators for steel and aluminum and I think they might help in this project... the only part I don't like is the warranty service issue... How can I get past a supercharger on the engine or make it quick to remove while still making it fully operational and effective. If I mod my truck and something craps because of it, I am going to really feel bad removing my speed parts before I have it fixed.

Has anyone in here had an engine replaced under warranty(4.7's only here)? What happened to it?
Are these reliable engines at lower boost pressure? I assume they must be if companies are making superchargers and turbo kits for them... No problems with pistons or anyhing??

If the SC route becomes too difficult, I will probably just have my buddy do a Head and cam swap for me and that will keep it looking all stock and hopefully pick up about 50-70HP. Good enough for a daily driver and undetectable by the dealer for service/warranty issues...

Any thoughts??

Please be as clear and concise as possible...

Thanks,
Ryan

anybody remember this post??
I would still like to know about it...

Also, found out that I might be getting a newer
ford Lightning supercharger so 5.4 to 4.7
which is like 16% difference, or up from 8psi stock to about 9 psi on a 4.7L

Will this kill this engine??????

If this is too iffy, I will do just simple bolt ons and do a head and cam swap when someone comes out with some really good cams. The ported heads won't be a problem though...

How difficult is the cam swap???

Thanks,
Ryan

no... but, that is why I know fabricators and I have a good inventive mind myself...

I can make it work...if I know the engine won't crap on me as soon as I do it..

As long as you have the fuel system to back it up, the 4.7 has no problems at all accepting 6 lbs of boost. For 6 lbs of boost you will need roughtly 45% more fuel going into the engine. You should be safe to roughly 7 lbs of boost with normal premium unleaded. If you run much more boost than that you should have either higher octane fuel or some way of retarding the ignition timing. Water/alchohol injection works as a bandaid, but an intercooler is a much better way to go. If you are going to run the blower from a Lightning, you will have to engineer that stuff yourself.

DUNER!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have a Turbo on your 4.7???????
SWEEETTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!

Me Like Turbos.....

What kind is it? Trim, specs? Manifolds? Did you make or is it a kit from someone??

I appreciate the information!!!

I know all about supercharging systems and Turbosystems, but I don't know much about this 4.7L engine and it's strength... Block, Pistons, Rods, Crank, etc. Head Gaskets... How many bolts per cylinder? 4 like LA(318-360) Block??

Good headgaskets?? Do they blow on you??

12.7 is quick Man!!! I love that, from a Turbo Dakota...

You have the exact same build sheet as I do except that I have a regular cab...

Hell, I haven't even picked my truck up yet (special ordered exactly how I wanted it, but within 2 weeks, I should take delivery, and then, all hell breaks loose... Just Kidding, I will have to save for awhile to afford parts. I would personally rather add one or two big performance items (Turbo, Fuel system to complement) than a whole bunch of bolt ons that eventually add up to the same cost of all the little junk and don't make near the power...

Where do you live approximately? I am in Tyler, Texas if that gives you any idea...
I would love to see your truck and see it run!!

Thanks and I hope to hear from you again!!!!!

Ryan

I fabricated the turbo system myself. Although it was my first attempt at turbos, I got a lot of good advice from some of my forced induction buddies. The aluminum heads are only 4 bolts per cylinder but the head bolts extend way down into the block. This makes sure that the deck remains perfectly flat for a good seal. Here's a web page with some basic info about the components I used for the turbo system as well as info on all of the other mods.

I live in Phoenix AZ. I was hoping that one of the magazines that were at the Truckin' Nationals here in October were going to take notice and maybe some pics.... no luck since the truck didn't have a chevy emblem on it anywhere. I guess these pics will have to do for now.

That is sooo AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, man, you did a great job on that kit... I would love to have something like that on my ride.

How much did the turbo and headers cost you?

Did you do all the header-manifold exhaust work?
Very nice.

How long have you had the system going? Any problems so far with components?

How much did you spend approximately for the whole system after all costs were in?

That is a beautiful truck and an awesome turbo setup there DUNER, You should be very proud!!!!

I bet you show your lights to all kinds of fast cars that would never suspect it....
:)

I saved your pic page as a favorite so I would have something to aspire to....

Thanks Man!!!

Thanks Ryan! Very much appreciated.

I fabbed up all of the tubing myself but had a machinist make a couple of the components also. I gave him the blueprints and he produced them. I would rather not say how much $$$ I have in the whole system since I got fantastic deals on most all of the parts. I called in a bunch of favors from selected individuals when they could help me the most. I have had the system running since October. The only problems I have had with components were due to my learning curve. This is the first turbo boosted vehicle I have ever owned or built so it's all new to me.

Yes, I must admit that showing my tail lights to supposedly faster vehicles does make me very happy. The look on their faces is priceless.
