OK Here is the question. I've got a red 99 SLT,5.2, 5 speed with a K&N Gen 2, MSD 6T ,Blaster SS coil, MSD Superconducter Wires, JBA Headers, Gibson Cat Back, Magnaflow High Flow Cat, Autolight 5224 Plugs and a Brand New Borgh Warner Cap and Rotor.

I've only got 57,000 on the Fuc-en thing and it still pings and knocks under full throttle or when towing under half throttle. It sounds like low end knock? I thought the MSD would clear most of that up? I realize that I will never get rid of it 100% but this isn't right!!! I was wondering if my PCM might be reading the fuel vapors wrong because of a bad O2 sensor or sensors? Is this possible or has anyone changed there O2 sensors and noticed any fix for this problem? I believe that if the sensors are not reading the fuel right than maybe it will run to lean or even too rich. I also have gone through 2 stock Cats on this truck!! They dont last long so i tried to go aftermarket with a high flow and no change on the ping. I used to run the premium sh_t and I dont know if that would have caused cat damage or even O2 sensor damage. I've been running the 89-91 octane since last year. I'm also gonna check the intake for oil seepage since I was told that this was a common problem. "Belly Pan Gasket". I have some 3923 autolights but haven't done anything with them yet. I figured that when I put the MSD in I'd try the stock plugs first and then the 3923's. I was curious if there was a diff. Any feedback would be great!!! Someone solve my problem???????

I had the same problem you are having on my 99' 5.2L. I have the k/n too. I brought it to the dealer and they flashed a module or something...fixed it for a while, or so it seemed and then went nuts again. I had the check enigine light come on in the mountains in VT, and then it settled down again. Only happens when accelerating or going up hills at 50-70mph or so, dealer has no idea what it is. I did just clean my k/n though, and before i did that there seemed to be no problems, now I've heard the noise a couple times, but no lights yet, knock on wood. Good luck, still bugging me!

I haven't had any lights come on but I've done enough mods to have possibly messed something up!! I drive the thing HARD, but this is my "bit_h" and I take good care of her. I notice it when I'm on the highway and I drop a gear and pass someone. It is mainly when the RPM's are high and when the intake opens up. I think it's a bad air/fuel mixture but I don't know of a way to fix it?

I was also wondering if anyone used the universal fit Bosch O2 Sensors for a Dak.

im about 90% sure you have a blown belly pan gasket. the stocck intake manifold is a 2 pice unit and the gasket between the plenum and the manifold (the belly pan gasket) goes out pretty easy. the syntoms are pinging and lack of performance.

you can tell if yours is bad by looking through the throttle body (a flash light helps), and if you see oil at the bottom of the intake its blown. a thin coat of oil is fine, but a lot is bad.

the best cure for this is to get the mopar 2bbl M-1 manifold. it is a 1 pice unit, and not only will you not have to worry about the gasket, but you will pick up about 20RWHP.

i have the bosh o2 sensors, and they work fine. the cheapest place i have found them is autozone. they were about $55 each. the front one is the most important one

I will try to check the intake tomorrow. If I were to buy the M1 which I hear is awesome, will that f_ck with my emissions. I live in MA but we have the CA Emissions?

well i have the M-1, and live in CA. it is not smog leagle, but i think it will pass the sniffer. as far as the visual, i think if you take it a shop that dosent know much about dodges (who does anyway?) they might not nitice it.

even if you have to change manifolds every 2 yeas, its not that bad. the install was WAY easier than i thought it was going to be

Hey Nick,

I have the same f'ing problem with my 99 dak too.
I've added a lot of similiar things that you have within the last two months but in addition, I had the belly pan gasket changed about 3 weeks ago (march 1st). And that DID NOT fix anything except for making my pocket book smaller. I was thinking about the M1 thing before I did the gasket but went for the gasket which turns out to not fix jack. All together I think it's something else and we wouldn't benefit from putting the M1 in. I run 87 in my truck and I have 75k miles. My trucks done this since I've owened it pretty much. Pings on Hills/50-70 exactly as you stated. I'm glad you posted this because I was going to by a new high flow CAT Converter but since that didn't solve anything for you, I'm stumped now.

Here's a hint - Don't run 87 octane gas! , the truck would probably run better on beer! On my girlfriends '99 318 Dakota the intake seal is still sealing and it will ping like crazy on 87 , I run 93 in it and dump in 2 gallons of 110 octane unleaded race gas once a week , it keeps the pinging at bay and the truck runs pretty good on it.

I'm running the mid grade stuff also but I know that octane booster is nothing but sh_t and if your looking to smoke your pistons in your woman's truck than keep on feeding her that O-Tane. As for (99Dak5.2L4x4) thanks for your input. I would like the M1 intake but I need to pass Mass Emmisions!!! I'm gonna try some different plugs. Cant ping and knock also come from too lean of a fuel mix. It almost sounds like it's starving for fuel? Like it needs to eat anymore though!!!

I agree with you Nick. Dumping in Octane booster is only going to mess things up more. 5 days ago I filled up with the a full tank of high octane from Shell (was 92 or 93) I can't remember. Believe it or not that seemed to stop about 90% of that pinging noise. I filled up with 87 again yesterday on an empty tank so give let me give it another day but there's still no pinging. Maybe the moparJoe's right about the gas. I'll post again in a few days after I fill up again. I think that dodge would know best which gas to run.....so I'm going to keep running the 87.

I've tried all of the different brands and octane ratings and some help more than others but the ping is still there in one form or another. You just cant totally get rid of it. My truck really likes the premium but my wallet doesn't!!!! I also found that running premium really messes up my exhaust. I run the truck hard down the highway and the high heat from the hotter burning premium fuel seems to melt sh_t -- if you know what I mean!!! This is my third cat ..and I think it was from running the premium. I only have 57,000 on my truck. You tell me??????????? That doesn't sound right.

I wasn't talking about octane boosters - it's all junk! Go down to a speedshop or your local dragstrip and buy the good stuff. If you're truck has 57,000 miles then the cat isn't you're problem-it's the dealers problem - federal law is that they have to warranty emission parts for 80,000 miles even if the factory vechicle warranty is expired.
