How would a freer flowing exhaust hinder performance for your 3.9L?

I have also heard that with too big of a pipe, you lose back pressure. But I can neither confirm nor deny such claims. I would say that your best bet would be a 2.5.

Well in that case, why do some people remove their cat converter, almost eliminating back pressure? I always thought that in some cases, alot of back pressure robs horses, and a free flowing exhaust helps horses

Just remember there can be to much of a good thing. To much exhaust will hurt performance. I am running a 2.5" exhaust with a 3" tail pipe.

Just call Flowmaster and tell them what you want to do and they`ll tell you what to do and get.
Just today I got my stocky muffler replaced with a Delta Force 50 and I feel and hear the differnce.
The tech line told my to keep the same size pipe because I need to keep back pressure with the 4.7 After all I need to tow my boat with it.

Hey CW did you experience a louder exhaust after cutting the cat? If so do you ever have a backfire like sound out of the exhaust esp. when you rev the engine really quickly and let the rpms fall.?? Do you know if Duner has had a problem like this?

Definitely louder it has a nicw low growl. No backfiring at all no matter what the RPM that I let off at. Can't speak for Duner.

3 inch Pipe wont hinder performance the reason why Dodge went down on the Exhaust size is for cost they saved a whole 30cents per foot but i guess it would save alot of G's since how many Trucks they build each year. I.E the 92 and 93 3.9 had Exhaust Manifolds that where 2 7/8 through the y pipe then into 3 all the way to the muffler the back to 2 7/8 to the rear. I had my local exhaust shop replace my muffler with a FLOWMASTER that had 3 dual exits and i LOVE the sound she makes. Had a Guy in a Ram ask me if it was his Truck or Mine then i gave him a Tap of the Throttle and he knew whos it was and was really impressed.

stick with 2.5 allthe way if you want to keep some low to mid range torque. 3" if you want mid to top end torque. I left mine at 2.5 and feel the dif, but also notice BIG dif when it gets to 3,000rpm. flowmaster series 50
