I have a 2000 dakota 3.9 ,when ever i tow a trailer or a 14ft boat it has fair take off power but it sucks the rest of the way. Like for instance,i picked up bedroom furniture with a friend of mine last month w/a 4x8 trailer load of a( fullsize mat/boxspring,dresser,4x3 cheststorage cabinet & 2 in tables)Thats it nothing in the bed of the truck.his move was about 60/70 miles. it perfomance sticks around town too, like u-turns,i step on the gas,no take off power or passing power either,i minds well put it to the floor then just maybe it'll take off.YOU GUYS GOT ANY ANSWERS,THIS JUNK NEEDS HEELLPP

Its shifts ok? , i had it checked out,had it checked out by 2 well known shops/1 trans shop, nothing found on scopes or anyalizers tests?. another shop told it might be the cat,or fuel filter which is in the tank.another one dodges brainy ideas.the 3rd shop guy said you can have correct fuel pressure but not good flow?

No, I mean, is it shifting out of overdrive when your asking it to accellerate or give you more power? It sounds like it's only downshifting when you stand on it, and thats not right... I'm not sure how you adjust it though, I've got a manual and it pulls trailers just fine.

If it's not downshifting, thats not the engine, thats the transmission. Or, at least, it's the transmission not knowing it needs to downshift. :0)

Do these things have kickdown cables? I'm not sure, my old Chevrolet had one, you simply adjusted it so it downshifted when you wanted...

My friend has a 2000 dakota sport 3.9 ltr and had the same problem. Just go to the dealership and tell them to download the new program for your truck. Trust me you'll feel the differance.

...would you want to use taller gears when you already feel you're underpowered?

if you feel you're underpowered you would want to go with a lower(higher numerically) gear set such as 3.92 or 4.10 NOT 3.21. as far as programming, try looking into Superchips tuner. use the search function at the top of each forum and you'll find lots of info on this.

The TB is very simple. You just pull off the TB, pull the sensors off the old and put it on the new TB. As far as the gasket goes I have reused mine about 4 or 5 times, a new one is like a buck or so I am just to lazzy and cheap to go get a new one. The only prob you may have is the cable. I have heard that the V8 may use a diferant cable than the V6. You can go to the dealer and get a V8 cable or you can swap out the TB shaft. I have the F&B TB on my truck and I did not notice any diferance. So this kick in the a$$ do not expect it.

2003 loss of power

I have a stock 4.7 4x4 quadcab Dakota with 120,000 miles on it. I love the truck but it has had gradually lost power and my gas mileage is now typically 13-14 mpg.
What are the first few things to check to bring back performance and mpg?
