Whats up all you fellow dakota owners, well anyways, ill cut down to the point, im 18, and own a 00 dakota sport 4x4 4.7, it was bought used so i couldnt get an r/t but i have no compliants, the 4x4 is just as sick. I have a case of sport truckalism and dont care if i have a 4x4, im doing evrything i can to make it into one nasty street muscle truck. ive had it for about a year and some months but anyways, right now alls i have is a gibson cat back exaust, ive been working on the body of the truck mostly, took the back seat out of the interior and put an audio system instead, the usual tints, covers and whatnot, i ordered a ram air hood and was wondering what would be a good air intake to get for it ,i was thinking airraid ,the hood comes with the connecting box so it can connect to the hood, also ordered a tunnel cover with the straight 3 inch angled spioler, no not one of those ricer spoilers ,this is a true sport truck spioler, anyways after working my ass off(becuase all of us work for our trucks right) i still have about 1500 to drop on the engine. I was thinking about getting gibson stainless steel headers, and msd ignition system, little things like throttle body spacers, and new valve covers( saw a pair with a couple of little air filters sticking out of them, what is the purpose of those?) or a mass air flow sensor, i want to work on my engine in sections, i dont like buying diffrent things and jumping all over the place, i want to finish my exaust sytem and air managment, or should i just save up my money for a keene bell or somehting. id like to hear your guys opinions on this and what would be recommneded to get first, i cant decided between the diffrent products to choose from, i would like some help with this and words of advice from the more experianced Dakota owners, things to do and things not to do. i am on a mission to make my truck as powerfull as i can, with time of course, because i had this person say to me that "trucks are slow", i laughed at him after that comment. anyways thanks alot for your time

I don't have a 4.7, but can still answer some of your questions. TB spacer=JUNK DOn't waste your money for no gains.
mass airflow sensor--not used on Dodge vehicles so no way to put one on let alone swap one out.
I would suggest getting a billit TB from F&B www.flometrics.com

Not sure how the ram air hood will work with your engine so can't suggest a good filter for it. AirRaid=JUNK again. Not worth the price they charge.
The valve covers you are talking about are just valve covers with brethers in them instead of the vacume hose that comes stock. No gains to be had from it, and it might even not be good for the engine.
Not real sure on headers for the 4.7.
before you buy the MSD make sure it will work on your engine. the 4.7 uses coil packs on each spark plug so not sure if a aftermarket ignition will work. See about getting your PCM reprogramed. They can still do the '00's easly. Mike Leach is the guy, not sure on cantact info though. You want cheap power for street racing, get nitrous.

Hey I have owned two 4.7L motors and love em. Here is a list if things not to do. Dont buy a Jet chip of any kind. Dont buy the Airaid kit, you can make or buy a better one, (www.intenseperformance.com)
Headers, not buy unless you have forced induction. Valve covers, no one makes any, however if you wanted you could paint yours.

Things you should buy:
Flometrics 70mm Throttle Body
Intense Performance, 360 Air Intakes, Air intake
IAT Adjuster
180 t-stat
TPS Adjustment
Remove belt driven fan if you have one
PCM flash (Mike Leach, KRC performance)

All of the above, minus the PCM mod should be purchased at Speedtweaks.net. Bernd, the owner will help you out.

Hey man I got a 01 4.7 4x4 first thing don't
buy a cold air intake build your own you'll save
about 150-170 dollars there pick up a 9" K&N
Cone filter from your local autoparts store..
Then on your 00 cut that damn cat off run duals
1 02sensor in one pipe and the other 02 in the
other pipe check engine light won't come on...
I Know I used to have a 00 4.7 Dak...then you
need robert shaw 180 t-stat, Some Autolite 3923's
then get a computer upgrade..Me myself just bought
a JetII from Jegs Today..the JetII it pulls harder
up till about 5800 RPM's before it felt like power
fell off at about 5600 RPM's It's seems to have
better throttle response and with it 20 degrees out tonight it seemed to spin harder too.But no
really complaints about it yet...but then I would
go with a 72mm TB...For The MSD yes if you plan
on NOS or a SC get a MSD for vehicles with 8 coil
paks....If you get this far with your truck all I
can say is watch out 4.6L GT's At least red light
to red light

hey fozy,
Its good to here of another 4X4 that wants to go fast. I have enjoyed 5 years of laughing at mustangs and camaros in the rear view after they stated "you cant race that thing, its a 4 wheel drive!!". I hope you enjoy yours as much as i have enjoyed mine. If you need any help or just want to B.S. give me a shout.

ok this is good, new info being processed in brain. ok the thing about nitrous, i dunno ,i have heard bad storys about that steriod. Blocks cracking, pistons flying threw hoods and so on.. Also i want to get headers, aftermarket headers have to be better then the stock cast iron ones, what about a supercharger i have a kenne bell in mind or turbo but i never saw a v8 with a turbo so i dunno, what about port and polishing the engine. Josh it definatly kicks ass having a truck thats a 4x4 that craps on all those people who say trucks are slow. They look sweet when they are doing it to, i must say the dakotes are one of the sweetest bodys for a truck that i have ever seen. Alright im gonna look into these sites that people mentioned.. peaCe

Then go to "tips and tricks." Then select "budget modifications." Even if not on a budget, these are good suggestions. You can also get your throttle body from this site.

fozy, not to offend you, but it sounds as if you dont know much about motors in general. You have never seen a turbo on a V8? I think you should maybe read some more before you drop 4 grand on something you know nothing about.

The new headers on 4.7's dont do really anything unless you have forced induction. I would ignore them.

Port and Polishing? Sure if you want to spend the money, but do you know what it does? And how much effort it takes?

Good luck, can we see pics of your truck with the tonneau cover on? Nice to hear about a young kid who wants to work on his truck, not many anymore.
