I have a 97 3.9 4x4. I'm lifted (5.5") and running 33's with 3.9 gearing. I would like to get a few more horse out of my engine so I can turn those big tires a little easier without having to re-gear to 4.1 or 4.5. I have looked at everything from K&N air filters to a cat-back exhaust and I am not ready to spend the cash yet until I get some feedback from someone here. Am I wasting my time?

Youre not wasting your time. Good things come to those who wait.

I have 33's and 3.55 gearing, but I have a V8.

I would say go with a air intak and exhaust. 360 air intakez makes affordable ones. You could go for a catback system, or go for a custom one with a muffler of some sort. (MBRP GRoup by)

The IAT Adjuster, 180 t-stat, TPS adjustment, pulley driven fan removal (if you have 2 fans), and synthetic oils can all give a little more oomph. Go to Speedtweaks.net and check out the tips and tricls section for inexpensive mods.

Youre v6 will be fine with a little uncorking.

There are a number of ways to boost horsepower and torque, like high-flow air filters and cat-back exhaust systems like you mentioned. Also you may consider a performance chip and/or ignition system upgrades like an amplifier to increase spark duration and intensity, and high-performance spark plugs. There are also devices like throttle body spacers or "tornadoes" to improve the velocity of the incoming air flow.
