Someone told me that headers suck if you dont have true dual exhaust. I will retain the stock y-pipe on my 93' but want headers. Will I be losing power like I did when I ran a strait pipe after the cat?

Anytime you increase flow and velocity you increase power. With modern fuel inected engines the benefits are not truely recognized until the remainder of the intake and exhaust tract are matched/ maximized. So you add free flowing headers- you still have a stock intake tract and single exhaust. You may benefit slightly from tube headers but a decent set cost $$$

If you are goin to do headers, you need to replace the y-pipe as well, or you won't notice as much gains, and like keen said, you need to open up the intake tract as well.

so how do I go about replacing the y-pipe? How much does that usually cost?

I dont know what all the "buzz" is about dual exhausts. My headers flow into one Y-pipe and flow into one muffler and out the rear end. There is no need for a dual exhaust, unless you are seeking praise and awe, at least as far as I can tell. You can pipe everything into one custom pipework and everything will be a great gain.

Also andrew, I saw in my new Summit Racing catalog that they have their own summit racing headers for Gen II Dakota's 5.2 and 5.9L. They are only $159. Check them out!

If you get headers, you need to make the rest of your exhaust free flowing. A high flow cat, and a high flow muffler. If your pipes are 3", then your entire exhaust including the cat and muffler, should all be 3" inside and out. If your cat was only 2", then you created a bottleneck and your money is sort of being wasted when compared to your potential performance gains.

I have the stock system on there(is it 3"?) except for the dynomax super turbo muffler in place of the stock one. It sounds great.

The stock system is probably 2.5". Go with a single 3" and you won't need duals. If you get shorty headers, I think JBA makes a y-pipe, or you can have a muffler shop make a custom set for you.

unless you go true duals, you will create less
power than a single out. a single in /dual out
muffler is less powerfull than a single in/
single out. single in/out works great. true
duals would mean running an H pipe and two
mufflers and/or two cats

what about for the 4.7 motors...would headers
be a good idea for me??? I have Airaid+
homebrew3" k&N filter and dynomax ultra flow
race welded muffler and 3" catback .... any
suggestions?

a stock y pipe would connect to aftermarket
headers right....if so which brand is
better...Gibson, Edelbrock, etc.

thanx

No,headers arent a waste. Anything that improves exhaust evacuation is going to help, and headers do that, especially when combined with low-restriction mufflers and a low-restriction exaust pipe layout. The only real downside to headers that I see is that they produce more radiant heat than exaust manifolds which will raise engine compartment temperatures.Take care to protect ignition wires and anything else located close to the headers heat.

I want to know why all the Y pipes go into a single exhaust or at least the ones I have found so far. My stock Y pipes go into the Cat, duels in and single out. Do I have to get a new Cat?

I think the RT had a special arangement where the
pipes went into the cat side by side where the
5.2l has a union before the cat. I would guess
that the 4.7 would be the same way.

I have the sport quad with the 4.7 and stock exhaust. A buddy of mine purchased a software program for his gmc to tweak everything. He says that if I plan on upgrading my exhaust, (I wanted to move up to headers into 3" pipe with matching catback, I am wasting my time unless I reprogram, or recalibrate the factory settings with the software pkg from summit. is this true?
