Subject: no fan = free horsepower

Message:
just took out my belt driven fan yesturday, and
put in the 180 stat. WOW! I will run it like this
for a while (i will see if it can handle 100+
temps in Cali.), so far, the trucks temp has
stayed lower than before I took out the fan and
the power difference is amazing. If any CC
tech thinks this was a bad idea, please tell
me. My AC still blows cold, and even sitting in
traffic on the freeway in 80 degree So. Cal
heat, the temp didnt rise above norm. My dak
came with the electric fan, and heavy duty
package, the electric fan is pretty big, and
seems like it can handle the job. the belt
driven fan weighs about 10lbs, it must have
been robbing me of a few horses at least. If
anyone else has tried this....let me know.

Thing I don't like is that fan will not kick in until about 220°. I put a thermostatic switch on the electric fan to kick in just after the thermostat opens.

Any 5.2s or 5.9s who have done this? I'm thinking about it for my 01 CC R/T, but living in Texas I'm a bit hesitant. I suppose if it works in Cali, then it should be good here too.

Was it easy for you to do? What happens to the belt?

I noticed a nice increas with the 97 5.2 I used to have. Down south I don't reccomend just running the factory fan probably won't keep up. You can put on a extra pusher fan on the out side.

Crusty: see the big nut on the rear of the fan attachted to the pulley. Get a 1 7/16" wrench and a hammer and give the wrench a bang a couple of times. The fan just screws right off. The pulley is pressed on so you don't even have to take the belt off.

yep...I used an air chisel, and tapped it (the

removing resovoir etc...anti freeze doesnt
taste very good ;(

CW: how did you do the thermostatic switch. I
reved the motor for about 2 min at about 4000
before the elec fan kicked on, I dont know
what temp the motor was at, but the guage
was almost at the middle.

Just got a flexalite thermostatic switch and wires it to the positive of the fan. (green wire) Got power right from the battery and used a 30 amp fuse.

Electric fan conversion is a great improvement. I have done it to three vehicles (Toyota Celica, 87 DAK, 99DAK). But, if you live in areas that get below freezing (like Wisconsin) you will see what looks like "steam" coming out from the grill area when you shut the truck off. Don't worry though, it's just condensation/frost vaporizing off the radiator. All three vehicles I converted to electric fans did this, but none of them leaked.

Sorry you missed all the posts on this about a month ago.

Did the same to my 01 4.7 5spd,

I live near Galveston Texas, no prob so far, don't anticipate one either with the factory elec fan. If needed, then I'll go with a thermostat switch to kick it on earlier as CW did.

I guess I"ve had my Homebrew ram intake, and the fan gone for a while now, and don't really notice any diff. now, I guess you just get used to the added HP.

Is the fan setup the same on the 01s - both the 5.9 and 4.7? I've got a clutch and an electric as well.

Maybe the 5.9 will get hotter, though...

if you change the thermostat, I doubt the 5.9
will get any hotter. Bernd sayed they pulled off
the belt fan on an 01 RT, I am sure the elec
fan in an RT is beefy enough.

When I get a turbo setup (not if, when) do you
think I should reinstall the old fan? I heard
turbos have problems with heat, etc, and dont
want to increase the chances of overheating.
Or would putting an intercooler on solve
this?? Thats a big space left open now with
nothin to fill it I wonder if it can be put to use?

I have also removed the fan from my Dak, but installed an adjustable thermostat for the stock elec. fan. I have it turning on at about 180 deg, when the t-stat opens up. I live in North Carolina so Ill keep you posted during the hot muggy summer.

Just to clear one thing up. "D", you said the nut behine the fan was "reverse threaded"(left hand tread). So to loosen the nut I need to turn the nut clockwise?

Don't remember the nut to take my fan off being reverse thread!

I didn't have the correct wrench size, so I sprayed behind the large nut with a little solvent like WD40, used a medium sized pipe wrench fit well to the nut, put a short piece of 2x4 (about 1ft) end on the wrench,(so I wouldn't have to tap with the hammer anywhere near the radiator) ,and tapped it with a hammer, and viola, it camE right off. I remember turning mine counterclockwise though.

Cool thing is: if it starts getting a little hot HERE in gulf coast Texas, I'll just put the fan back on, IT'LL TAKE ALL OF 60 SECONDS!

B,

Many packages come with the dual fan set-up.

Raise your hood and look for yourself, the electric fan is in a shroud on the rear (engine side)of the radiator. If you have it, then pop the belt fan off. IF not, don't do it, not until you get an aftermarket elec fan!

Good day to ya

Is it possible to get the fan out w/o having to remove the resivior? Really don't wanna mess w/ the coolant seeing as how I had to deal w/ it putting on the M-1. Can I just slide the fan, clutch and all, in between the resivior and pulleys?

I put a Black Magic on my 5.2 here in Atlanta..warmest day since I have done this is 85 but no problem so far. Will just have to see if it can handle really hot days, if not, I will put the clutch fan back on until it fall and then go with that, its worth the hp and gas mileage.

the resevoir is easy to take off...just two bolts
close to the top on either side. makes it much
easier to get leverage to take the fan off, you
might be able to get the fan off w/o removing
the resevoir, but it looks like a tight squeeze. I
decided to take my fan off after I had taken the
resevoir off. It didnt look like I needed clutch
and elec fan so off it went.

I had to notch my robert shaw t-stat, cause the
stock t-stat had one, and the stock o-ring
wouldnt have fit otherwise. I also drilled a
1/16 hole in the t-stat to allow for better flow
(the stock t-stat has a small valve at the
bottom) make sure the side with the coil goes
towards the engine. I didnt even use the little
purge valve at the top of the radiator. its
proabably a wise decision to do this mod
while your motor is cold, not after driving in the
heat for an hour!
