Subject: "Homebrew" Cold Air Intake
IP: Logged

Message:
Anyone who has built there own homebrew intake, these questions are out to you. Where did you get your K&N filters from? What did you use to build the intake? Is PVC strong enough that it wont crack in the 120 degree summer weather i get here in vegas + the engine temp? What is the best material to use and does it need to be heat painted? If anyone could just let me know what exactly they did to theirs i would really appreciate it. I want to make this my weekend job.

Got my K&n cone from ebay. Like $35.00 total. brand new and pre oiled too!
I used PVC 3in in diameter. I live in south florida. So it gets hot here too. No problems yet. I painted it with 500 degree paint. Truck runs alot better.
My 1990 Dak has a different set up for intake then yours. You pretty much just take a fernco rubber connector and run PVC to the front of your truck and pop the K&N on the front end. Good to go!. Hope this helps. Go for it!

Ya I guess there are a whole lot of idiots out there. I guess we all just clean the melted plastic out of our intakes every week.

I made mine out of 4" ABS heavy duty plastic and haven't had the slightest problem whatsoever.

There is alot of info on this sight about intakes, Here is an example of a previous post.

The K&N web sight has very many sizes available, I used a filter with a 1/4" stub out the end of it to secure it to the fender well. I'm not sure this is really necessary. BTW I am talking about putting a fernco 3" quickie 90bend on the TB and a short piece of ABS pipe and a 90 bend with a nipple to secure the filter. I bolted the end of the filter to a bolt on the fender well. I really like the setup. I used a RC-2530 and had to use a router to the nipple (to shave off the diameter) to get the filter to tighten down . It is a VERY tight fit because the RC-2530 flange is the same size as the 3" ABS PVC nipple. Don't forget to order the recharge kit at the same time, you will need it sometime. If you don't want to remove your air hat there are options there also. Search for Cold Air Intakes and you will find plenty of pics to help you out. My set-up is similar to Bakermans (except for the bend at the filter, I used a FxF 90 and a nipple.) $35.00 for filter/ $10.00 recharge kit. (Martell Racing) Check around and you can probably find a muffler shop that deals in K&N

I went down to lowes today to price some things out...$6.70 for a 3" thick 5' long THICK black ABS pipe (only comes in 5'). $1.81 each for 2 45 degree ABS elbows. And $6 each for 2 fernco rubber coupling. I still gotta find a filter somwhere. Any ideas?? Over all i think it is a great idea. Ive heard on other posts, people have actually painted them with high heat paint, anyone know where to get this stuff or think its even worth it.

KPp7Dak,

I've got the part #'s for K&N's, cone and cylinder filters with a 4" ID, should fit pretty well over the 3" ABS, or Fernco, or PVC. I"m at work now, they're at home. E-mail me if you need them.

Todd W, has a good idea, find a parts store that will work with you to find one that's right.

dakman-Just another idiot here. I'm using a 3" PVC I got off the ground at a job site near my house. It's thick walled, white, paited it heat proof black to match my fernco fittings. It's over the valve covers on my 4.7L, no problems yet, but next time I smell burning plastic, I'll be sure to stop and pop my hood just to check it out. 8`)

I to was gonna make my own til i found one on EBAY. No melting parts here yet in Las Vegas. It looks like this intake was made with clean smooth 3 inch ABS. No need to paint it if you get clean abs parts. Heat paint won't insulate it any better. This guy auctions an intake ever so often. he may sell you one direct if you email him. Some of the other setups on ebay use smaller filters. THe filter i got from this guy does have the 4 inch opening as he states and fits perfect on the tube without requiring the filter to stretch over the tube. I got 3 mpg better and this intake has a nice roar when you give it some gas.

what kind of pvc are you talking about dakman..it must have to be really thin walled to melt under engine heat. The only worries i would have with pvc is the glue melting or coming apart...but to do that your engine would have to be running really hot. So if your intake melted dakman then you should check your cooling system and not worry about your intake
As for the origional question...PVC is fine i had one...and filters are easy to get

PVC pipe glued with PVC glue won't come apart - it fuses the pipe together. Whatever type pipe you use I'd recomend the proper glue for that pipe. That's why all purpose glues aren't allowed in the building code in my state. use ABS glue for ABS pipe. These glues chemically melt the pipes together.

Glue?

We don't need no stinking glue, man!

No glue here on my homebrew. Fernco 90, no air hat, 7" piece of 3"ID PVC, to a fernco 3" to 3" fitting, then to my stock air box, that has been highly modifed, insluding the K&N insert. I sould have gotten the K&N, part # RD-1460, or RE-0870. They both have a 4"ID opening. Instead of the air box, use another 90degree fernco, then the K&N fits perfect over it, and clamp it up!

I had already had the drop in upgrade, so for now I'm using the stock modified box in a ram air way.

K&N part numers posted abgove in this post.

o.k. i've read all post on the homebrew intakes and heat sheilds..well got me to brainstorming..i want all of you to give your opinons good or bad..ok first remove all stock intake eqipment..homedepot has a vent pipe its called B-vent..its a metal pipe (thin)but its a pipe in a pipe..the size is 4 3/4" outside pipe and 4" inside pipe..sraight and 90 angles..get the foam in a can stuff and 7"round heat and air vent pipe 3'peice and a 7"vent reducer 7"to4"..get a few rubber fernco fittings and a hand full of the radiator type clamps appropiate sizes for both..now you build the normal intake 90 at the tb with fernco, straight peice, then the 90 peice then a straight peice just enough to connect filter you connct all peices use clamps or fernco your choice..you want the filter to end up where the old filter box was..make sure it all fits good.now take it all apart..take the foam and inject the space in between the two pipes let cure..this insulated pipe alone might make a cooler intake..put it back on the truck leave filter off for now..now for the heat sheild part..take the 7"to4" peice 4" side put a clamp on it slide it on were filter goes put on filter..now take the 7" pipe cut to fit to opening at radiator. slide the two 7" peices together and use small sheet metal screws..this is a definite custom job.. but not to bad after all is tight and fits good take it all apart and paint with high temp paint..does that sound like a 400$ cold air induction system or a 80$ peice of junk..oh yea almost forgot check k&n for the new extreme cone filter its filter all over..so let me know what you think about it how much power you think..etc...etc...plan on doing this next week end!!i will post pics!!!later

I made mine this weekend .used fernco 3"quickfit 90 to throttle body.7" of black 3" abs to another fernco 90 then a 3" section to join the fernco to the k&n filter # re 0920.this filter has a 3 1/2" opening that fits perfect over the abs.I ported and polished my throttle body 2 weeks prior.that alone was an improvement, but after the intake that really complimented the port and polish.it really pulls hard from anywhere in the rpm range.really impressed with way these mods performed.

Oh I painted the white PVC with hi heat paint, like the BBQ grill paint. NOT THE HEADER PAINT..

I used a K&N filter number RU-3130 which was a perfect fit... looks great works great and cost about $60 to make....The tube is heavy gauge metal so i guess it wont melt.
