Is anyone towing around 4000 lbs with a high performance 4.7 PCM flash ? How bad an idea is this if I were to run high test and an octane booster additive ? I have the tow package, 3.55 auto. Thanks

I fully realize why they say you're not supposed to tow with the advanced timing of the performance PCMs. The chance of pinging is much greater with the timing advanced like that. But....

If you're running premium fuel and it doesn't ping, then the additional timing helps you tow. The advanced timing adds tons of torque to the engine and that means it doesn't have to work as hard to pull the same amount of weight. This not only makes it tow easier, but improves the fuel mileage by quite a bit. I guess the whole key is being able to recognize whether it's pinging under load.

Before I installed the turbo - I towed a car trailer with lots of weight on it all the time. The only time it ever tried to ping was when I was just burning regular unleaded and was going up a grade (towing another Dakota). Once I put premium unleaded in the tank it never pinged again. When not towing - I was able to run regular without any problems at all. I seriously doubt that you would need to resort to an octane booster additive - just put premium into it and go!

Leading the charge. LOL I just don't have a life. Now that Duner has tried this I may have to. What altitude was all this at. I mainly tow at 3000+ feet.

All altitudes

I've towed at altitudes anywhere from sea level to about 10,000 feet with it. The higher you get in altitude, the less it's prone to ping, even though it's having to work harder because of the lack of oxygen.

Yeah I was just curious because I am at 3000 here and it just gets higher where ever you go.

Don't sell yourself short, CW ! As a Dodge mechanic you get to see a lot, I have a lot of respect for the advice I've sen you offer here. I'm sure a lot of us trust your opinion more than some service managers. About those high output cams, you noted there wasn't a lot more lift on the exhaust lobes, was there maybe more duration ? Sure is funny the way the 4.7 seems to like intake mods more than exhaust mods.

Unfortunately I can't tell you anything about exhaust duration. I don't have a cam degree wheel to check it out on. There may very well be more duration. I would think so since there is qutie a bit more intake lift.

I know its trickier to measure, thought they might look a little wider. Might like to go that route eventually. Good luck with your mods !
