I've heard as a mass produced motor without any exotic parts it shouldn't be much more then a current 360 option (about $1000 for the 360). The problem on the Dakota will be is that it will probably only be available as a special package. You may have to pay for a lot of other stuff as in the current R/T. I don't know why anybody would buy a 2002 Ram until these new motors are available, I guess if they just want a basic pickup. It also depends on what is considered the standard motor, as to how much more an optional motor would cost. The best news here is if they make a crate version of the 5.7 hemi, w/o all the accessories and feul injection (like the current 300 and 380 hp 360 magnum crates) then it may not be over $5000.

What do you figure the price would be if you went down the dealer and just bought the engine? I've got a 2001 Dakota I would love to put it in.

Yeah I have already asked about the 5.9L and they quoted me a price of around $2,000 for the entire block, including wiring harness, heads, intake, etc.

Sorry, $4000 for the block, just got off the phone with my local Dodge dealer, and it's basically the crate motor, nothing above the intake. But they would probably charge $65 an hour to install. Not to mention the rest of the engine components, transmisson, and a new rear end to handle all the torque.

I wouldn't mind installing a 305 HP 360 in my Dakota. But you might could find a rare last Edition R/T that packs the 305 HP 360 Magnum motor for just a few grand more than the 250 HP version.

My Dodge dealer sells the 5.7L Hemi Long Block
for $6,500. If you have a core they give back
$1,400. I could buy one with a core and discount
for $5,100.
A friend of mine just bought a 6.1L crate engine for
about $7,500 complete with intake and fuel injection. He also bought a new 2005 Dakota Pick Up and is looking for someone to install the Hemi in the Dakota. The Dakota came with the 4.7L and 5-speed auto. Will have to figure out the computer hook ups. DC people told my friend at the SEMS show that they did not want every Tom, Dick, and Harry running the Hemi's in their street rods.

Someone on this board showed a 5.7 HEMI install in a Gen III about 3 years ago. The Gen IV (2005-up) chassis frame rails are too narrow to fit the 5.7/ 6.1.

In an earlier post I stated that my friend was putting a 6.1L Hemi in his new Dakota Pick Up. He since changed his mind as he decided that he would have a fast Dakota that would not really be worth much on resale. He found a 1970 Dodge Challenger that was in the beginning stages of restoration and bought it. He has the 6.1 installed in the '70 and is almost finished with its restoration. He should have in on the road in about 2 more months. I will a bronze-orange color.

Ya I once wanted a new engine in my Dakota....I decided that in about 5 years it wouldnt be much fun anymore and i would be broke. Well, that was 2004, and now its 2007. My little 3.9 is getting 21mpg, and I still have every penny in my pocket. Now, I'm looking at buying a gently used R/T and working on that instead! :) I'm gonna keep this dakota for aquite a while more tho, its perfect.
