I want to replace the cat on my durango 5.2l
i went over to the muffler shop, the guy told me i wouldnt get any performance gain, because i already had a high flow cat? true or not? if i wanted to do it, i would need to get a kat-box right? to bypass the o2 sensors?

The kat box is for if you get rid of the cat all together, which is Illegal in most states. Most factory cats are free flow, but look inside and see what it looks like, if it looks like a bees nest honeycomb then it is free flow, if just pipe, NOT! a free flow.
